As he title suggests I have a non functioning ethernet port, iMac 27" 2011 HS fully updated.
Sys Profiler see the ethernet adaptor:
Broadcom 57765-B0:
Name: ethernet
Type: Ethernet Controller
Bus: PCI
Vendor ID: 0x14e4
Device ID: 0x16b4
Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x14e4
Subsystem ID: 0x16b4
Revision ID: 0x0010
Link Width: x1
BSD name: en0
Kext name: AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext
Firmware version: 57765-a1.54
Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext
mDNS offload capable: c8:2a:14:1b:06:e9
Version: 10.3.1
Network Setting states:
Status: Cable Unplugged
Either the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in or the device at the other end is not responding.
I have googled the heck out of it and tried, different cables, different router ports, verified other iMacs connect fine via ethernet, reinstalled HS over existing install, complete reformat and reinstall HS and checked lan status before each update, deleted and re added connection via System Prefs/Network, advance renew DHCP lease, deleted location and added new one, SMC reset, PRAM reset, sprayed contact cleaner into the port on the rear of the iMac and cleaned with cotton bud.
Im leaning towards a logic board component failure but don't know how to check, done a visual inspection and the area near the port looks ok. Seems like the port is not getting power?
The reason I think its hardware is this board accidentally got zapped when the cpu heatsink bridged the PSU when the power was connected, I know right shouldn't be messing with it when when your tired and forget to unplug the power cord.
Anyway I replaced the blown capacitor at C7427 (logic board) and the PSU, I also noticed that the ODD fan wasn't working also so swapped it out and successfully got the Mac up and running and after testing everything found out no ethernet.
I can confirm all other ports on the rear of the iMac work fine (didn't test audio line in out and firewire though)
Not the end of the world as I could probably get a thunderbolt to ethernet dongle to work but obviously would like to see if I can fix it first.
Any other suggestions much appreciated.
Thx.
EDIT: looks like Steph had the same accident with almost identical symptoms except my fan blew and the ODD sensor is fine
