A while back I started having issues with my mid-2014 Retina Macbook Pro's trackpad. It's to the point now where it's not working at all. I'll give as much detail as possible, maybe someone can help? Any input would be appreciated.
It all started about just over year ago, my trackpad started randomly quitting on me. No rhyme or reason that I could tell but every now and then it would just cut out. I figured out that restarting the computer always fixed it, and while annoying, it didn't happen often enough to warrant an apple store visit. Figured it might be software bugs. Running High Sierra at this time.
Over time, say a few months or so, it got more and more common. I started getting worried, but figured since a restart fixed it, maybe the next OS would address the issue. I marched on.
Worth noting that when my trackpad stopped working, my keyboard remained fully functional.
Eventually, trackpad stopped working almost entirely. I would turn the computer on, it would work for maybe 10 seconds, then become completely unresponsive. Enough time to login, and by the time my profile booted it wouldn't work. So I phoned apple.
Apple found it strange that it worked at startup then stopped working just due to time. Even if I didn't log in and just stayed at the login screen I had the same result. About 10 seconds of functionality then kerplunk. Dead. They took me through some troubleshooting; resetting PRAM, SMC, booting into safe mode, reverting to a time machine backup from before the problem arose, nothing helped. I felt hopeless.
Then I started searching around for answers and found a tip suggesting to delete PLIST files relating to the trackpad, forcing a "refresh" of the files and maybe fixing it. These are supposed to be found under "~/library/preferences". I looked for them and couldn't find ANY files with trackpad, mouse, multi-touch, anything relating to my trackpad at all in this location (or any others I looked through). I found this very odd. Maybe meaningless but I figured I'd add that in.
I took the base cover off to check for bulging batteries or loose cables. Batteries looked completely fine and cables were snug as a bug. I even unplugged and replugged them just to be sure. No avail.
Does anybody have any input? Remember, my keyboard is completely functional. Trackpad doesn't even work at startup anymore. Haven't been able to move the pointer with it for even a split second in months. I'm now using a USB mouse and it's beyond annoying not being able to use my computer without it.
Thank you in advance to anyone who replies and I'm happy to give more detail about my computer if you think it will help.
Cheers!
Edit - I'm now using OS Mojave and the update had no effect
