Hi - I'm trying to erase my MBP on Catalina before selling. I got to disk utility fine after going on recovery mode. On apple's website and on Imore it says to delete the start up disk. iMORE says it's Macintosh HD. my computer shows:

Apple ssd....
under that CONTAINER DISK2
under that Macintosh HD - this is greyed out
under that Macintosh HD - Data - this is greyed out.

Which one do I erase for this?

I'm a bit time pressured which is why I'm anxious!

thank you!

Since you're trying to do it from within a partition on the drive you can't just erase the whole drive like you would with a bootable install disk. I suggest just creating a new admin user (admin/admin), then logging in with that user and deleting your current user, making sure to check the box that says delete home directory.

Trying to use internet recovery to reinstall is going to take several hours.

Internet recovery is pretty fast if you have a fast internet connection. I have used it several times on different MacBooks and it's usually taken around an hour to install.

Are you selecting all devices from Disk Utility?

I figured it out, thanks a lot! I erased the APPLE SSD one and now it's installing Catalina - about 21 minutes to go it says!

I have two hours so I think I'm good! Thanks for everyone's replies!

Glad you got it sorted.

BTW, which MacBook are you selling?

I shouldn't say selling. I'm sending it to a refurbisher, one of those services which takes away your old Mac. I normally sell my old Macs on eBay but given the current situation, I decided against it. I'm meant to be one of those "shielding" so it's not worth the risk of running around post offices' or anything.

And it's an old Mac! A 2013 MacBook Pro 13 inch. I got it in March 24 and it's handled everything well and still does. But now seemed a good time to get an MBA! which I'm writing on right now.

Nice. Are you in Toronto? I'm in Toronto and usually sell on Kijiji to get a bit more.

It's a late 2013 13"? I have the same unit :)

Sadly I'm not! It's a very deceiving name! From there though, and in the UK. It's a great unit! Yes late 2013. Is yours still in good shape?

Like I said, normally would have happily used a service like kijiji or eBay and gotten more but then I'd also have to find a way to send it!

It's always nice to see people from Toronto on this forum.

Mine is in great shape. I put a clear skin and case on it from day one. I like to use electronics for as long as possible. I replace when they no longer suit my needs.

Enjoy your new MBA!
