Help trying to reformat my Mac M1

How are you trying to do this? Are you booting into Recovery or are you trying to use a USB installer? I almost always use a USB installer to update and do most anything in Disk Utility. Maybe you need to redownload the current version? I use an app called Download Full Installer that pulls directly from Apple's servers.

If so, I suggest you try something called "Mist" to download the OS installer and create the flashdrive in one integrated operation:

You'll need a flashdrive of either 16gb or 32gb in size.
Not sure if 16gb works, but 32gb (or larger) will.

Which mac model is it?
If it's old, like 2010, 2011 mac, then this might be the thing with Apple discontinuing old macs by not letting their installers work on old models. There's an easy solution, though, that involves using a usb bootable installer and setting back the clock. I had this with a MBP 2010.
