Hi guys, my wife started updating her ipad last night. It is now in recovery mode, or dfu mode (cable/iTunes screen) Anyway, she has not synced her ipad to any pc or mac since she got it and does not have a backup. My question is if there is maybe a way to backup while in this mode, or to maybe get it out of this mode without restoring first?(I know there is a way if you put in this mode yourself, however that's not the case) She has a lot of valuable pictures of our children and doesn't want to lose them. Any help is appreciated.

The cables/iTunes screen is recovery mode (when in dfu mode, the screen is completely black), and I'm afraid I don't know of a way to get out of it and go back to normal when it is the result of an update gone wrong. I'm really sorry about your pictures, but this is why your iDevice should never hold the only copy of your media. Your wife didn't have iCloud photosharing turned on?

Going forward, I suggest you turn on iCloud backup. It is perfect for situations like this, and you don't have to think about it, as it backs up automatically every time you charge your iPad.

See if this still works..
Here are the steps to get out of DFU mode:

1. Hold down the "home" + "power" button simultaneously.
2. After 12 seconds of holding, release the home button and continue to hold the power button until the apply logo screen comes on.

Thanks, how would I find out if she had the cloud turned on for her photos? I went to icloud.com and found only contacts she had saved, I don't see anything about photos anywhere though.

Ok so I downloaded and installed the icloud control panel on my pc and noticed that there is a backup that was last created 11/17/2013 so that appears to be good news. My only question is how do I use that backup if i'm restoring, cus i'm pretty sure it asks if you want to restore as new or from backup? I haven't had a iDevice in a while, this iPad is strictly my wife's lol so sorry if I seem a bit ignorant.

Once you get the iPad restored, disconnect from computer without selecting either "setup as new" or "restore from backup." Then continue setting it up over wifi, and you should eventually get to the option to restore from iCloud backup.
