    Hey Everyone.

I have an issue where my USB 3.0 drive (WD My Book Studio 3TB) won't ever sleep - regardless of the WD settings or OS X settings. I want it to sleep when the drive isn't in use to preserve its life and to minimize energy usage. The spin-up wait does not bother me.

I suspect this is because I have OSX Server installed, which is running only a Timemachine Server and File Server, which both provide access to this USB drive. So question (1) is, does OSX Server keep USB drives spinning and preventing sleep like this for others?

Since I suspect that is the case, I also was also wondering (2) whether anyone has insight into how to uninstall OS X server from Yosemite? I would rather not reformat and re-install everything, as I have a lot of other software set up and running just the way I like it, and there are no other issues.

    Thanks for the help.

The only issue is the one in your imagination. In its current state, your external drive will outlast several iMacs. It will still be kicking years after you replace it with an exabyte SSD.

    C'mon, that's not only unhelpful, it's rude.

There are two settings both set to put the drive to sleep, and it's not sleeping. A function is not working as it should. And you're saying that's not an issue? I don't care what you think of my motivation to solve it, it is indeed an issue.
