Help! Vertical lines on screen on startup

Turned on my Macbook Pro 17" 8,3 the other night and the screen looked like this.

I called Apple, and the tech had me do a couple of commands which fixed the issue. But I'm trying to figure out that happened. Is it the graphics card? The HD?

I'm running the latest version of El Capitan.

I had purple glitching on my screen from time to time. I sent it in and they labeled it as this problem instead. They ended up just replacing the display clamshell lol.

But if it's intermittent, it may only seem to fix it. Could be failing dGPU or cable.

I have the same MacBook Pro that you do.

That's definitely a problem with the dGPU.
