LOL! Congrats!! I was actually going to suggest you go through your mom, then I saw your post. This always worked for me, too, when I was younger. Much younger.

sigh

Hehe...

Did you get your RAM from Apple? They overcharge a lot.....

I would have gotten 1 512MB stick from Apple and then a 512MB stick from Crucial or somewhere else.

After reading on MR, I realize that Apple overcharges, but I really am computer illiterate and terrified that I will either a) order the wrong type of ram, or worse, b) mess up my baby in the process of swapping in the ram. So I figure $157 for the upgrade being factory installed and covered by warranty isn't too bad (edu discount, doncha know).

1. Most sites will let you choose the model and then let you pick the RAM that is compatible with the model that you chose. AKA, stupid-proof but not idiot-proof. There is always a bigger idiot.

2. It is really really really hard to screw up when installing RAM. There are pictures to show you how, instructions in the manual, and even after you open it up pictures on the inside.

Buy hey, to each their own.

despite all that, there are frequently threads posted here from people who are in a panic because their newly self-installed ram isn't showing up.......of course it usually ends up with them being told to go back and push it in HARDER........but in the meantime they're going thru a lot of internal distress and "NOT having fun" until the ram is working

and if you've ever had to call applecare with a problem, you know that practically the first thing they ask is "Have you installed any 3rd party ram??? You HAVE!?! WELL!!! that's you're problem right there!" and then you have to go through the process of uninstalling the ram to prove that it wasnt the cause of the problem before they're prepared to proceed.....more distress if you aren't the type that's happy mucking about inside your computer

I know there's a cult of "buy the cheapest ram" here abouts.......but seriously, for some people having the computer arrive all set up and ready to run is a far more enjoyable experience than having to immediately tear it open and work on it.....even though some people LOVE immediately modifying and reinstalling and so on, for others it's just a pain

LOL, in some ways the "MUST install your own ram" thing is a bit like "MUST change your car's oil yourself"

enjoyment and satisfaction is where you find it I guess

Thanks, you put how I feel so much more concisely and clearly than I could have. :p Ironically, I do change my car's oil myself... my other baby, a MINI cooper S! That's right folks, a girl gettin' all dirtied up w/ her car oil.

Sometimes, when I find that there's something out there that I want but can't have, I take inventory of the things I do have. If I were you, I'd grab that 12" PowerBook, jump in the Mini Cooper and drive to your nearest hotspot for your next post on this topic.

Once your realize all the things you have already, I think you'll find it tough to pine even a second longer for another thing.

My $0.02 about how to deal with your "flaky" dad...

Well, this post just made any sympathy I had for you regarding your "flaky dad" fly out the window.

LOL..
I would suggest you stop right now with your comments on the stuff you have... anymore, and people will start thinking differently about you. I know I would :D . Good luck with your iMac.

I was gonna say that your dad doesn't sound flaky, he sounds sensible, and you sound like a spoiled brat.

But hey, like all spoiled kids, you got what you wanted at the end.

Congratulations on getting one more thing that you don't really need. An external monitor would have sufficed, as many people suggested already.

nodding

I don't blame any of you for thinking or feeling the way you do, or for voicing your opinions, and I harbor no hard feelings.

Just wanted to say, that sometimes things aren't what they seem.

Sorry I blew up on you like that.

If you have the means to get what you want, then more power to you. I'd love a Mini Cooper S and a 12" rev C Powerbook and a 20" iMac with that much RAM.

I guess I'm pretty spoiled myself with a car of my own and a rev B 12" Powerbook. But some people are even luckier than me, I guess.

Congratulations, and good luck with your rev B iMac. Do come back and tell us how it works out. :)

thanks for the input...

i was hoping for the 20" because the extra screen space is a definite plus w/ photoshop. darn palettes. hee.

the twenty is beautiful. with a seventeen you CAN get by with photoshops pallet dock up top or hit the tab key to make the pallets disappear but you have to understand, if you have less than 512megs of ram you might think your machine is slow even though it isnt. ram really makes things run smoother. if you go with less ram just remember your machine isnt slow its just hungry for more ram.

what about a dual 1.8 ghz? those go for $1500. you'd still need a monitor.

Thanks to everyone for all of your feedback.

My mom has used her influence (no kidding since she's the breadwinner of my family) and my dad has finally succumb to the women of the house!

I just placed my order for a brand spankin' new, rev. b 20" iMac G5 w/ 1 Gb of ram! :D

I think I qualify as a true switcher what with my almost one year old 12" pb, and soon to be iMac!
Awesome. Congrats!
