Help w/ my 12" G4 powerbook ram?

I got a 12" G4 powerbok w/ the stock 256mb ram and was wondering how to upgrade the ram? Can I add a 1gb ram onto the computer with the stock 256mb or do I have to take out the 256mb, thus risking losing the memory. please help, thanks, B.

You simply install the 1GB dimm in addition to the 256MB of DDR that is soldered onto the logic board- giving you 1.25GB of RAM total.
