I'm running a 2.0 GHz Core Duo MacBook Pro with 1GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.6.4.

Whenever I try to open the Help window my computer locks up, occasionally requiring a hard restart. It doesn't just lock up the help app, the entire system locks up and I can't do anything, if I'm listening to iTunes even the music stops playing.

I've tried repairing permissions, checking the drive (which came out as ok), and reinstalling the OS. None of these things helped.

What about adding 2 or 3 GB more RAM?

Is your HDD full?

My hard drive has about 200GB left so it's definitely not full. My Mac only supports up to 2GB (yeah its old LOL), but it's been running smoothly on 1GB for a while now. Everything else seems to run fine it's just this one app thats a problem.

Bumping your RAM to 2GB would definitely improve performance. Which app is your problem?

Yeah I've been thinking of doing that. Any recommendations for a brand?

Mac OS X's built in help app is the problem. No other program is giving me trouble.

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out.
Also, Spotlight is not indexing at all. Should I force it to reindex?
No, if it's finished, try using Help now and see if it still locks up.
You can also determine if it's indexing by the Menu Bar icon:
attachment.php
(not indexing)

(indexing)

Yeah it's not indexing at all though it did give me an idea. I just ran every operation in Maintenance.app and everything seems to be golden now. It's still a bit slow but it's not locking up the whole system anymore. I think I will invest in some more RAM.
