help with a MacBook

hi there, ive been offered a MacBook from a friend of mine for FREE!........BUT! theres a catch! it turns on (all lights come on and HDD spins up) but the screen stays black? anyone got any ideas what this could be? Graphics Card/Chip? any help would be very helpful!

Does the macbook chime and POST? Could be the light is burned out in the LCD or the inverter is bad.

I know this is going to sound dumb, but did you check the brightness? I have freaked out before thinking my screen went dead but it was just the brightness was turned all the way down.

If it has the startup sound I would probably suspect a bad LCD, other wise 3beeps for bad ram.
