I'm trying to add some editing symbols to a PDF in Preview on my iMac. I'd like to add an insertion symbol--a caret symbol, an upside-down V). I see in the edit menu an option for emojis & Symbols. I've found a caret symbol there, but it doesn't copy to the PDF. Am I doing something wrong in Preview to use this symbol? Ideally, I'd also like to add a period symbol (small circle with a dot in the middle) and a capital letter symbol (three small, short stacked lines). Any ideas on how to get at least the caret symbol to work?

Here is the process I use in Mojave:

Open “System Preferences”, select “Language and Region”, and click “Keyboard Preferences”.

At the bottom, check the “Show input menu in menu bar.” This will add an icon to the menu bar.

Open your document in Preview, and position the cursor at the location where you want to add the symbol.

Click the new Menu Bar icon, and click “Show Emoji & Symbols.”

Find the symbol you want and drag it to your Preview document. Drop the symbol in after you see the green "+" sign.

Thanks, d1sahib, but this doesn't work for me in Catalina. I already have "Show input in menu bar" checked, but to access Emoji & Symbols, I have to click on the Edit dropdown menu. There is no new menu bar item. Selecting a symbol doesn't place it in the document.

Wait--I think I figured it out. Symbols have to be added as text. So I click on text and add the symbol to the text box that appears. That works. Is this also the same in Mojave?

Yes. I drop the dragged symbol in the text box after I see the "+" sign. For pasting, the text box has to be active with the cursor in it.

Glad it worked out for you.

Yeah--Gotta wait for that "+" sign to appear before it works!
