Help with attaching filters for D40

I bought Hoya and Tiffen filters for my Nikon D40. They are 52mm (the size it uses) but I haven't figured out how to put them on. I don't think they snap on so do I need some type of mounting equipment?

Filters generally screw into the end of the lens - it's threaded.
