Help with basic mirror RAID

I'm new to the whole idea of RAIDing my iMac with an external HD, so I have a question I'm hoping to get answered before I go ahead with it.

Is there a way to set up my external drive to mirror my iMac HD without erasing the iMac's HD?

Oh, wait... would I be able to partition the external drive and RAID a partition with my iBook that would act as an automatic backup each time I plugged the iBook into the external drive?
