help with iphone unlocking process from start to finish

I really wouldn't want to f*** it up either... I don't have an iPhone, but after Apple and 02 announcement, I'm seriously thinking of importing and have literally spent all day search for guides and step-by-step instructions.

Let me know if you get it unlocked and activated... what UK network you're on, and most importantly how did you manage to get an iPhone from the US! 😀

bought an 8gb one from ebay! it worked out at exactly the same price as buying it in the UK, so i'm happy. waiting til nov 9th and getting a 'uk' one would still mean having to unlock it. so theres no difference really.
the thing thats confusing me is does my version of itunes matter?

I'm currently on a contact with 02 which is due for renewal in November anyway, but I called today and they won't give me it on my current contract and that I would need to take a plan that comes with the iPhone... So that's what made me think of importing. Plus i can't really wait to Nov 9th now 😀
I don't think you're version of iTunes matters, but I haven't done it and i'm not 100% sure. Hopefully someone around here can post other information.
Keep me updated on your unlocking/activation process... be nice to know that someone else in scotland had confirmed and got it working.

You'll be fine (says the person who has never tried it before and who hasn't get an iPhone to try it himself)... if you do mess up (not that i'm saying you will and hoping you don't) there are always helpfull people on here and on that site (the one with the guide) who are more than happy to lend a helping hand.

Ok...well modmyiphone seems comprehendible. From what I understand, the major steps are:
1. have firmware 1.0.2 and itunes 7.4.1
2. activate the phone with independence
3. without independence running, download and run apptapp
4. connect to wifi using apptapp and install community sources, bsd subsystem, and openSSH in order.
5. download unlock.app, lockdownd, and cyberduck. and proceed to unlock...
This is pretty general, but what I got from modmyiphone....Does this sound right? Just wanna make sure cus I should hopefully receive my phone in the mail today....Also, this is considering these steps are for a phone brand new right out of the box right?
Input anyone? Don't wanna F up my new phone so I wanna be a 100% sure...

Was reading on the site where i linked to the guide, that the current version of iTunes (7.4.2) will work with the iPhone and guide. Its the future iPhone updates that you need to watch out for, just encase Apple has done something which will reset the unlock... so they are advising 'non-hackers' not to update instantly until others have tried out the update and (if Apple have reset it) until they have another unlock guide...ect..ect
