I need some help with files that my wife edited on her Windows machine using AcdSee. The edited files keep coming up with compatibility errors in preview, won't display in iPhoto and Aperture 2.

What's worse is I 'switched' my wife to a Mac over the weekend with the promise of compatibility and stability. She agreed, under duress, so long as the transition would be easy and painless. So far her JPGs aren't compatible and 10.5 has crashed several times....needless to say she's been studying the styrafoam packaging to determine how to put it back in the box and return the iMac....Thus I need a FAST resolution to save egg on my face and keep me from burning one weekend a month cleaning virii and spyware from the XP machine. HELP!

Graphic Converter might help. (It might even already be installed on your machine. Check your 'Applications' folder.)

    Why would it be included?

Occasionally, certain third=party apps come preinstalled on some Macs. Graphic Converter, Art Director's Toolkit, and Comic Life come to mind.

Something doesn't sound right. Leopard shouldn't crash just because it's trying to open an incompatible JPG. I'm also surprised to hear that ACDSee would be producing incompatible images -- I used it when I owned a PC, and absolutely loved it (and still lament the fact that there is no OS X equivalent --- sssh, don't tell your wife that.)

Would you be willing to post an example JPG so some of us can try it on our systems and let you know if it causes any problems?

The crash wasn't a result of the jpg issues....that was from something else. That looked to be an isolated thing.

I think the problem lies with permissions. When I tried to copy some of the suspect JPG files to the iMac to try to work with them locally (over my home network) OS X told me that I didn't have the necessary permissions to do so. I gather that I don't have the necessary permission to view them either.

But the most odd thing is that there are many files in the same directory that I can view, edit, delete without issue??? Go figure. Anyhow, the suspect JPGs show up an only an icon with the text "JPG" on them while the files I can manipulate show up as thumbnail icons of the actual photo.
