Okay, after about 9 months, I was able to change the administrator on my wife's old laptop, which I got as a hand me down (iBook 12 in. G4). Now after I updated it, I had to restart, and once it was restarting it froze on the "Apple" screen at the beginning. I let it sit there for 10 minutes seeing if the updates were installing, but nothing happened. Shut it down and restarted it, same thing happened again. Any help with this would be appreciated

Sounds like the update corrupted some system files. Insert the computer's restore disks (or the OS install disks if you've upgraded from the version the computer shipped with) and run an archive & install with the option to preserve users and network settings enabled. Once it's done, run Software Update a few times and you're laughing. There's no need to back up before doing this.

(Well, maintaining a backup is always a good idea, but the installer won't delete your files or applications.)
