Check to see if the computer is still under applecare. If they purchased applecare, the contract will probably be expiring soon. There are a couple of ways to check if it is still covered.

Go to In the "search support" box at the top left of the page, enter the serial number. (Available under "About This Mac" -> more Info.) After entering the serial number, it will bring you to the product page. In the right column, second box down, there will be a table labeled "AppleCare". Click on "Check your warranty status". And from there you should be able to find out if they have it or not.

You can login into AppleCare agreements here (

It sounds like the hard drive is shot. If you are feeling adventurous, go to and purchase a new drive and install it yourself.

The install DVDs that come with all Macs are computer specific. You would need to purchase a retail copy of OS X to be able to install on the MacBook.
