Help with old MobileMe account!

I signed up for the MobileMe trial several months ago and now when I try moving that to an iCloud account it says your MobileMe account has expired but you can still use the address for other Apple services, or something to that effect.

I want to use the same email address I had a few months ago, but don't know how to do it.

Also, if I get this email address back is there any way to use it as my Apple ID?
