hi,

ive got a new browser "opera", but none of my other programs (like thunderbird or xchat irc client) detect opera as my default browser - so i cannot directly open webpages from these programs -
since i have deleted my previous browser, how can i set opera as new default - there is no such option in the opera preferences..

Oddly enough, the default browser is set in Safari's preferences. Do you have Safari on your machine?

what can i do now ?

Use Pacifist to get it off the installer DVD.

Not only that, but if Safari is crashing it's because there's something wrong there. A bad .plist file, or corrupt cache. This is generally easy to fix. Next time try fixing it before deleting it. It'll help you out with these predicaments.

You don't need to use Pacifist or anything. All native browsers have a way to set default browser. Mozilla Camino, for instance, has a choose "Default Web Browser" option in its preferences. Check it out.
