I am going to record some bass tracks and the bassist wants to use his bass head (the ampeg VST classic) as the preamp. I have just plugged bass into my firepod directly before so I am not sure how to put the head between the guitar and the firepod in the chain.

Can I bypass the firepod preamp or will I have to gainstage both the bass volume controls, the vst classic head and the firepod?

Couldn't find any photos online of the back view of the VST classic but the front appears to have two inputs, one reads, "input" and one, "-15db." I don't suspect either of those would be how I connect the head to the firepod.

Here are the specs:

RMS Power Output (2 Ohms): 300-Watts
RMS Power Output (4 Ohms): 300-Watts
Preamp: Tube (2 x 12AX7, 1 x 12AU7)
Driver Tube(s): 2 x 12AU7, 1x 12AX7
Power Amp: Tube (6 x 6550)
Tone Controls: 3-Band
Mid Tone Control: 5-Position Selector
Ultra High/Low: Yes
Balanced Line Out: Yes
Preamp Out/Power Amp In: Yes
Slave Output: Yes
Dimensions (W x H x D inches): 24 x 11.5 x 13
Weight: 80 Pounds

Balanced Line Out: Yes

take that to a line in on the firepod.

fwiw, i like to record 2 signals from the bass: one direct (which the above counts as) and the other through an amp. i'll usually use the direct, but sometimes will blend the two @ mixdown.
