My IPad is jailbroken but I want to keep my game saves when I unjailbreak it to get 4.2 update
On both infinity blade and plants vs zombies a have a lot of playtime and I want to keep my progress. I would like to unjailbreak my iPad but I need to move over the game saves somehow. What should I do?

If more details are needed say so in your reply.

You will need to navigate to var/mobile/Applications/

Here, find your specific game, go inside and save the Library folder and the Documents folder if there is anything inside.

Then after jailbreak overwrite the folders back to their locations.

EDIT: sorry, I thought I read you would rejailbreak after the update.

Could you try to explain to me specifically how to do all of that?

To get to the directory where the saved data is located on your iPad you will need to ssh.

Here is link on what is and how to ssh:
    http://www.iphoneheat.com/2010/05/how-to-ssh-into-ipad-using-winscp-cyberduck-windows-mac/

Once you are in the filesystem then you can just navigate through the folders:

    var/mobile/Applications/

Under Applications you have all your Appstore apps but the folder names will be random numbers/letters like this:
    http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c72/aj_aj/step3.jpg

Go through them and you will see the App's name. Find the ones you are looking for then save the Library folder and Documents folder that is inside to your desktop.

But if you are not going to rejailbreak then there is no way to put the saved data back. Only way to access the filesystem is jailbreak.

    STOP!

you don't need to unjailbreak your iPad to update!
Just update to 4.2, then use RedSn0w.
Once jailbroken install all your Cydia mods/hacks.
    Then reboot with RedSn0w tethered.

No need to backup any save files or anything at all.

I did this and was worried about Infinity Blade, but the procedure never once required me to restore my entire iPad to default settings or restore into custom firmware so I figured I would be fine, and lo and behold I was and you should be too!

If you aren't gonna jailbreak 4.2, then just update its not a big issue, you won't lose any data and everything should be fine.

You can update to 4.2 with all the Cydia apps or extension (backgrounder, sbssetting...). They will however not work after the update.

Once the update is complete you can then use redsnow to go do a tether jailbreak and re-install all your Cydia apps or extension. This shouldn't result in any lost data for non-Cydia apps unless you do a complete restore which wipes out everything.

Hi guys, I'm in a similar scenario and am looking for some help.

    Situation:
    1. jailbroken iphone 3GS using jailbreakme.com method on 4.0.1
    2. Want to upgrade to 4.2 and not jailbreak anymore
    3. I've already purchased the games I wanna keep (PvZ, angry birds etc)
    4. Girlfriend wants to preserve the game save files since she's progressed quite far.

Someone in this thread suggested that I could just install the 4.2 update over the current jailbreak situation, would that un-jailbreak the phone? I was actually thinking of following the guide here to restore the original settings:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=603129 but I don't see how that can preserve the game save files.

If it's possible, I'd like to retain my text messages too.

Any help would greatly be welcome. thanks in advance!

    Question!

I have a jail broken iPad and want to update to iOS 4.2 untethered jailbreak when it comes out, but if I do that, will I lose all my cydia mods and apps? I want to keep all my saved game data.

As long as you update (not restore) in iTunes then re-jailbreak, you won't lose a thing...
