Since i put in an additional SSD in my iMac 2010, i have been using the SSD as my boot drive.

One problem that occurred to me is that after a certain length of time not using the HDD (which stores all my media and other files), it shuts down on its own. I can tell from a) a subtle decrease in noise and b) takes a long time to load the HDD drive in finder and it follows by a subtle increase in noise when the drive eventually loads.

Is there a way i can turn off this automatic shutdown of the secondary HDD? This shutting down / turning on happens quite a few times a day and im just worried that it decreases its lifespan and actually does some other damage to the iMac.

I think that you go to System Pref, Energy Saver, and deselect "Put the hard drive to sleep when possible." Otherwise, probably something in Utilities>Disk Utility. Hope this helps :)
