Apple doesn't really care that you lost your iPhone. If it means you buying another iPhone from them they don't care at all. AT&T/Verizon/Sprint whatever you have will be like "as long as you're still paying your monthly plan".

Is that what you do faiz23?

Nahh...it is easier just to buy phones honestly from people upgrading. Then just use factory unlock along with all new accessories and resale for international use. Stealing phones and extracting information is not my cup of tea and I leave that to the lower people in our wonderful society. I have a regular day job that pays me plenty and flipping iphones is a hobby to offset the cost of fancy toys that I desire.

It was in my back pocket when one of the muggers grabbed me by the throat, it was out two seconds later when the other one demanded it.

WTF?! Please tell me you live in a gang infested slum? I go through life trying to imagine that things like this don't happen ( I know ... wishful thinking)

Nope, though (no offense) It's pretty naive to think it doesn't happen and even more so to think that only "gangs" in the "slums" mug people. I've lived in the District for 10 years, have good street sense, but was 1/2 a block from my friends house looking something up and listening to music so was just zoned out a little (at 7:00pm on a Tuesday). Again, it sucked, but making generalizations about cities in that fashion isn't helpful to anyone, and to be perfectly honest, it was in one of the more heavily gentrified sections of the city.

Its amazing how people thing muggings only happen in the slums. I guess you don't have to worry about getting your car jacked if you can see white people around you.

On a serious note, this is why I stopped using white headphones and don't use a holster or belt case.

My Iphone 4 was stolen back in June and I tried to locate it but the kid(s) that took it disabled find my iphone so I had no luck. AT&T did nothing other than cancel the service so it could not be used at that point. I put a wipe on it as well. 2 months later the phone wiped and that is how I knew I did not just lose it. I figured I would just wait it out without a phone until the Iphone 5 came out. And poof...Iphone 5 in my hands. It is such a crappy situation to have your phone stolen. I had all sorts of things on there. Oh well. Sorry to hear that the phone was stolen. Some people are absolutely terrible.

A friend of mine lives in a bit of a shady area in Brooklyn. I couldn't find her apartment one time, and I felt VERY nervous pulling out my iPhone to search for the address. I actually walked over to the most populated main street to do the search.

It's always a good idea to keep your phone pocketed when walking about in a big city, and keep your wits about you at all times. Even in nice areas. Scum will often migrate into nice areas to steal because.. surprise! people tend to have more cash and valuables on their person there.

Situational awareness is the most important life-skill you can have.

I understand the (intentional) naïveté of my comment. Hence the addition of the 'wishful thinking'.

Crime is part of life and its not racist or condescending to acknowledge that crime is worse in certain areas.

What struck me about your post was the blatant aggression of someone just out and out grabbing you around the throat. Its the immediate physical attack that shocked me. Walking up with a gun or knife is what I think of in a mugging. Not that I would have less urine on my pants either way.

Exactly, this isn't a "big city" thing or a "slum/ghetto" (seriously people?), I feel a lot more nervous for my physical well being in the rural midwest/south than any large city I've visited, but paying attention to your surroundings will serve you better than trying to stay away from certain (hmmm, who could those be?) people or neighborhoods.

Oh yeah, definitely, though if I had my choice (ha!) I think that's what I would have gone for, if there was a gun or knife I probably would have just fainted from fear :) Also, bizarrely, they were, for lack of a better word, courteous about it, they asked for my wallet and phone and seemed a little confused that I didn't have cash on me, but once they were about halfway up the alley I asked if they'd leave my ID (CC and everything was easily replaceable) which they did, then asked if I wanted the CCs as well. So yeah, highly stressful at the time, but overall could have gone a lot worse.

Side note - Like I mentioned above I've lived all over DC for the last 10 years and this was the only time anything even remotely close has happened to me, and was a little over 2 years ago. I've lived in much worse neighborhoods, and was more surprised about it being the middle of the week in the early evening.

You should of set a passcode on you phone befofe it was stolen then, if you did then the could enable lost mode.

I have mixed feeling about passcode. If lost, it means the finder can not try to find you cause they can not get into your phone.

Does make it harder for the person that stole it though. But, they can just reset it to factory, right?

Yup, DFU mode.

Stealing iphones isn't just a 'get over it' (referring to your earlier post) too bad you lost your phone problem.

It's Grand Theft. A felony. And I hope everyone who steals someone else's phone goes to jail.

My mother got her iphone stolen last month. We reported it to att and got the phone locked. She activated her old phone and last week got a call from "att" to verify the report of the stolen iphone. She verified her info down to the last four of her social security #. Needless to say it was a scam and the people unlocked her iphone and she couldn't use her old one. Reported it again to att and they cleared all charges on her acct, and put a special password she has to give whenever she communicates with att. Makes me angry because she is an older lady that needs her phone since she lives in PR and all her kids live in the States.

Accepting money as bribes and corruption is a felony but politicians do it all day long. What is your point with that argument. In this society people will lie, cheat, deceive, steal, kill and rape for no reason. Protect your loved ones, your self and your belonging by using your rights and bear arms. Next time some one tries to ask you for your iphone reward them with a .45 acp hollow point at point blank range and they should not bother you any more.

A friends of mine had his brand new iphone 4 stolen at the bar. He had it sitting on the counter and someone grabbed it. Whoever stole it sold it and that person took it into the local at&t store and they confiscated it. So stores do keep stolen phones if you alert at&t and get a bit lucky. The odds are against it but it does happen.

had my iphone 4 stolen last year at the gym along with my wallet (there was suddenly a big surge of theft and break ins to cars at all the local gyms in my town at that time). i filed a police report but the cops were no help.

couple days later, i got a call from a computer company in pennsylvania that called to confirm that my card was used to buy a slew of computer parts, after saying that wasnt me they gave me the his address that he used (****ing idiot!).

i did some internet searching, found the guys name, school, picture, and some court case info on him when he was charged with larceny in the past.

2 buddies of mine then ran into him leaving another gym in town and roughed him up a little bit and took my phone back. the theif called the police saying his phone had been stolen (my phone), cops showed up, ended up arresting him and confiscating my phone.

turns out he was commiting all the robberies to support his drug habit. hes currently serving 5 years at the cheshire correctional facility and i got my beautiful iphone back (with a new case he had bought after he stole it). justice.

I added some text to my lock screen picture with my first name and contact info. It won't do a bit of good if the iphone or ipad is stolen, but in the event an honest person finds it, they will not be able to say that they didn't know how to contact me.

MY POINT was pretty obvious.

If someone picks your pocket how do you know to turn around and aim a gun at them (and probably get yourself arrested). All the politicians need arrested also. Every damn one of them. People lying, cheating, stealing and violence are the effects of a world full of selfish, stupid people with no morals.
