It's a strange new world we live in where newer products are worse than older ones.

Certainly is, my wife was looking at replacing her 2011 15" with 500GB HDD, there was a 750GB HDD option when she bought it. Now it is SSD only, base is 256, 512 and 1TB options but to get any upgrade means a 50% price jump over her original!!!

So I just pulled the plug and bought a 9,1, which I think is the last MBP with user replaceable storage and ram - I guess I'm going to have to baby it...
Thanks for the help!

It's not strange to many others. Many do not need that much storage. Some people do not mind carrying external. Some uses iCloud or something similar for storage.

You can look at PNY StorEdge and they have 128GB SD card that fits nicely into your Mac.

First off, 128gb is still tiny. Secondly, it sticks out, creating a hazard. Third, iCloud is in no way a substitute for a large library of media assets. Sure, some people don't need a lot of storage, probably most. In olden times that's why there was a consumer and a pro range.

In other news, Ford announced that they are only producing a version of their F150 pickup without a bed. It will be smaller, and look nicer, and our marketing people say that most people don't haul a lot of stuff in their pickups anyway. For those who really want it, a precarious trailer will be available as an add-on.

Since you want storage, I was providing another option rather than Micro SD card. If you mind it 'sticking' out then the other options you said looks way uglier.

In olden times, Apple did not intend for folks to install a second HDD so it's not about consumer or a pro. Don't relate that to storage.

Just get an external.

It doesn't matter what they intended, it's what a lot of people with large storage needs did. I'm not going to get an external, that's an ugly kludge that defeats the whole purpose of making the machine slick and light.
If apple stop making pro laptops I'll have to get a Lenovo.
