Our son has a 6 plus 16GB and when he tries to update to latest software he's getting a message that there isn't enough space. I've been told that it could be updated through iTunes instead of iCloud and this would solve the problem. When he updates through iTunes he's getting the same type message. Any help?

Phil Schiller, this one's for you man ;)
You need to delete some apps, there's no work around on insufficient space. family member had this issue going 5s from 7.1.2 to 8, had to delete some apps then it can be upgraded. you can download the apps again later on from the app store after the upgrade.

Could I back up everything on iCloud, then restore and update through iTunes then get the back up from iCloud to get the apps and pictures etc back?

Perhaps deleting some apps and/or music/videos that can be loaded back on easier (without the need to restore from a backup) would be a better way to go?

I've had this issue with my 5S when updating to iOS 8 via OTA update. Had to connect it to iTunes.

Seems they have recognized that problem and are changing it with iOS 9.

I did connect to iTunes and got a message about space and it wouldn't let me update.

Okay. And have you checked, how much storage space he is really using? How much is free? And what Apps use the most storage?
Maybe if the storage is really full and there is (let's say or guess) only 200-300MB of space left, the update via iTunes is not possible.

He has over 500 picture. If I transfer pics to our Mac will that free up space for the update? If so will he be able to get the pics back onto his iPhone without any space issues?

But 500+ photos is probably just 900-1100MB. I bet there are other app's installed that use much more storage.

Check the storage on the iPhone.

I don't use iCloud with my photos, so I can't tell you how or if you get more storage with it.

His Photo Library is 1.6GB.
