When trying to connect via VPN though a Sonicwall 2040 Pro (Standard 3.1.0.2) and using an IPad (4.2.1) we were informed that we needed to use L2TP from Sonicwall Tech Support. They gave us the following setting for our L2TP Pool for IP 192.168.5.50 – 100 range. They verified all other setting saying that everything including rules are correct.

When trying to connect we get the following error in the log file of sonicwall.

41 01/19/2011 09:53:14.832 IKE Responder: IPSec proposal does not match (Phase 2) 166.137.136.37 63.115.87.226 10.86.56.16/32 -> 63.115.87.226/32

The IPad gets the following error:

“The L2TP-VPN server did not respond. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator”

Hi,

Not sure if you are still having an issue. We have seen a small bug that can happen with versions of iPad and iPhone (often when they have been upgraded from previous software versions) trying to connect using the method SonicWALL have suggested.

We have forwarded our findings but they have not updated their tech docs to reflect it.

If you change the encryption type to AES-128 it should then work with the iPad/iPhone, but will stop a Mac being able to connect over an L2TP connection.

I hope this helps.
