While saving a file, I accidentally overwrote another file. I know its a long shot, but is there anyway to retrieve file that was overwritten?

No, as it has been overwritten. Have you any kind of backup (Time Machine, ...)?

A more descriptive and precise thread title will help cater to the right audience and get you more responses. (see rule #3 under Minor Problems)
To edit your thread title, just click on the

button on the bottom right of your original post and then click the "Go Advanced" button below your message.

Have you also taken a look at MRoogle, since that question may have been asked several times?

Btw, the above quote shows you how to change your thread title accordingly, no need to make a duplicate thread out of this.

And what about that backup I asked about? If there does not exist one, the file is lost, unless you spend 1000 USD and more for a professional data recovery company, which MIGHT (not "will") be able to recover part of the lost data.

Data recovery service might be useful. It's possible that the new file 'physically' was written to a different spot on the drive, and only the file directories were actually overwritten. However, if you have used the computer since then the chances of recovery go down as the system continues to write files to the drive. Also recovery services can get expensive. Good Luck.
