Or maybe OP sent a message to her phone asking them to return it, then they had her phone #, if she had notifications on before she wiped it.

or what about just removing the sim card and putting into another device to find out the number? lock your phone does not lock your sim card, does it?
just asking ...

edit: unless pin code is there

It leaves one question. Is the thief (fool) that stole the phone the creator of the bogus site or is this part of a larger ring of crooks and scammers? I wonder how large of an operation this is....

My suspicion is that a two-bit thief took the phone, saw that it had activation lock enabled, and then Googled "bypass iPhone activation lock." Doing that results in links to some nefarious "lock bypass" services that claim to be able to get past Apple's iCloud Activation Lock service.

No doubt, it's this service that's the larger operation. Any two bit their who knows how to use Google comes across this site, pays a few bucks, and this service does the phasing work.

From the sites I've seen, it looks like they're asking for the IMEI of the phone in question. I'm not sure how exactly, but somehow they use that info to get the phone number or Apple ID associated with the phone, and then that's how they contact the victim and phish for the password.

so they are phishing for the icloud password then using it to remove activation lock? clever, clever bastards. i guess it works 50/50.

op, change your icloud password if u did not already.

You know why? because i cant change it. because of the security questions. and its true even if they get hold of my apple id they cant get anything from it because i dont have a credit card. i just made the apple id to download free apps

Do you use the same password, or a very similar password, on any other website or service? If so, that might be compromised as well.
