My guess is that $425 is the standard "non-promotional" trade value for a 14 Pro Max while the $800 on the XR from two years ago was a promo trade offer tied to whatever plan you were on before switching in 2023.

If, for example, you were currently on a Go5G Next or Go5G Plus plan you would be getting $830 to $1,000 trade-in for your 14 Pro Max today.
That makes sense -- thanks.

As a first time iPhone buyer with obviously no trade in which plan would you folks recommend and why? (Interested in the Pro Max)
Thanks

Currently on Verizon's "5G Play More" plan, which "includes" Hulu/Disney/ESPN, which isn't eligible for any phone deals. We get a 10/line discount for autopay and paper free billing. Just this morning I received this email from Verizon. Total BS! This is the equivalent of bullying. They just make up their own ***** rules forcing ppl to upgrade which will end up costing more if I want to keep Hulu/Disney/ESPN...

We are committed to bringing you our best network and services. Our focus on ongoing innovation enables us to give our customers the best. To ensure we deliver premium experiences and offers, sometimes we need to make adjustments. We want to let you know about an upcoming change to your Auto Pay discount.

Here's what to expect:
While we continue to offer Auto Pay benefits, your $10/line discount will be reduced to $5/mo. and your bill will increase starting on or after 10.10.2024. However, your current plan price and benefits will remain unchanged. You also have the option of moving to myPlan, where you’ll receive an Auto Pay discount of $10/mo for every line you switch.

myPlan gives you the power of choice. You’ll still get our award-winning 5G network, but now you can choose your Unlimited plan and customize it with a variety of perks—exclusive savings on subscriptions for entertainment, shopping and more. You may be able to save on subscriptions you already enjoy.
I’m on the same plan and got the same email. It will still be cheaper to stay on Play More even factoring in the promo.

$1000 for an iPhone 12 at AT&T? That's more enticing even if you have to sign for 3 years.

I chose on the last two phones to buy directly from apple unlocked and either take a slightly lower trade in, or sell on my own. Unlocked has better resale anyway.

In the past, I have taken the bill credits, and if I wanted a new phone before the 36 months is up, I just sell the phone on my own for a few hundred, and apply that to my new phone. If you pay off the phone early you don't get all the credits so you just need to let it play itself out which is annoying. They do this so that you sign up for the extra monthly fee to upgrade early which is basically just renting the phone.

These are not deals. It is insulting that they try and tell people that it is. It's a three year lock on you to get the value they are trying to tell you they are offering. Just another lie to consumers. But sadly so many are so willing to take the bait only to find out that you're getting screwed. Even though it's hard to call a deal but the best way is paying for it out right and trading in the previous version (the higher up to PM the better value retention.) I only go PM for that very reason, better trade in value.

100%. What do you mean by PM? Pro Max?

Got an email from Verizon a few days ago. Giving me $1000 for my 13 and we can stay on our current plan. Ordered the 16 pro for 36 months which I’m OK with
