Uhh... so £55 cheaper for something that's half the size? Am I supposed to be impressed? Is that like $200 USD or something?

They definitely mention that the player can also play following formats:

MP3-, WAV- and WMA-files

and they think without converting it into ATRAC3 as Sony did in older players.

Sony say that the player will only support ATRAC3plus at 48/64/256 and ATRAC3 at 66/105/132. Support for MP3 and WMA will still be by way of conversion through SonicStage 2.1. No i.LINK, it uses USB 2.0 for transfers. Yes, it has a disk mode like the iPod.
