I think this Voice Plan makes complete sense when you look at it through the HomePod. For example, for newcomers to the Apple ecosystem, who may only have an iPhone and just picked up a new HomePod mini.

It makes much less sense if you’re deep in the ecosystem, don’t have a HomePod, or just plain don’t like Siri (which is a lot of people it seems).

How are any of these Siri music subscriptions different than what’s already baked into iOS? I ask Siri now to play/skip/pause my music and she does it. What am I missing ?

This is spot on. It doesn't make much sense if a consumer is deeply engrained in the Apple ecosystem. However, for those customers who are maybe transitioning from Android and just bought an iPhone and HomePod Mini, this absolutely makes sense.

Except those moving over to Apple likely already have a Spotify/Tidal/Qobuz account and are going to be scratching their heads over this odd offer. That would be me, BTW.

What more evidence do you need that Siri is a flaming pile of garbage than Apple giving you a discount if you're willing to put up with the annoyance of using it?
The discount should be given to anyone within 30 feet of the subscriber.

The people who use this service will be the same ones that have headphones that leak more than Snowden.

Nice, but Siri rarely gets the following bands correct;

Van Der Graaf Generator
Grobschnitt
Eloy
Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies
Triumvirat
Premiata Forneria Marconi
Aqvarium (Russian band and yup the spelling is correct)

Carnivorous (Hawkwind Light Orchestra)

I’m more interested in the new Classical music features next year.

I thought I could always say “hey, Siri, play “80s Hits” radio” or whatever song and it would play? Half the time when I ask for a song it plays some random song not even close to the same name. I don’t get the point to this service when it’s something we’ve been able to use anyway. What am I missing?
Its $4.99 for no UI.

Anecdote alert
Me: Play Coldplay Coloratura on Apple Music
Siri: Playing Coloratura by Coldplay on Apple Music
Apple Music: plays Two Door Cinema Club - Gameshow

This actually happened. I tried it 3x and every time it would pick a different artist and song. This is all while having cell service. I manually selected Coloratura and it played instantly … Apple has a long way to go.

You save a bit each month so you can use frail voice commands for longer?

This seems like the most reasonable thought process they had.

It’s a way to sell Apple Music to people who only own the HomePod or Apple TV. Also a way to lure more subscribers who may just end up upgrading to the full service

The discount is because you don't have access to the whole app. If they thought Siri was a flaming pile of garbage they would offer it for free or remove it completely. This is a way to get people to use Siri more with music, and have more Siri data to work with, which doesn't happen with the regular app as much as they would like as the option to just scroll and select is easier for many.

What about songs with weird characters like some of Bon Ivers’ tracks? eg:

It's just about increasing Siri interactions by offering a discount to forgo manual selection and control. They have to charge because they are giving full access to all the music, but it's the Siri data they are after here.
They have 11 years of Siri interactions - what do you think they expect to learn?

Siri never gets the song right when I tell it to play something, people are going to be disappointed with this service
