Apple's newly announced iPhone 14 models include a new Action mode when recording video, and here's our first real-world example of the feature in action.

The video below was taken by tech reporter Rich DeMuro during the hands-on time that followed Apple's "Far Out" media event on Wednesday, when it unveiled the new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to Apple, the new Action mode aims to help capture smooth-looking video that adjusts to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when video is being captured in the middle of the action.

Apple's Cinematic mode, first introduced in last year's iPhone 13 series, has also been improved for the iPhone 14 models, which can now record in 4K at 30fps and 4K at 24fps using the feature.

Pre-orders for the new ‌iPhone 14‌ models open on Friday, September 9, and the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ will begin shipping on Friday, September 16. The larger 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus will begin shipping to customers on Friday, October 7. Both the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available for pre-order this Friday, September 9, and will be available to customers starting Friday, September 16.

Is this not similar to what Google has been doing for a while where they combine OIS and digital IS to make a super smooth shot?

Matter of fact, I thought that iPhone had adopted that same method as well already. What’s different here?

Magnificent!
This feature alone has seal the deal for me.
No more gimbals, no more heavy cameras with IBIS + OIS, no more heavy equipments, no more strange eyes and shoutings from securities at parks because all I need is a discreet iPhone to get a high quality video footages for my works.

This is an upgraded version of the feature that appears to work much better.

Just like most gimbals, it won’t help with Y axis movements, like footsteps.

It also won’t keep your phone level, which is the main job of a gimbal.

Yes they had, but maybe this new process is better? It certainly seems so.

This isn't good enough (for paying for an upgrade).
I'd like Action AND Cinematic in one mode.
Otherwise, I'm happy to just use cinematic with a gimbal which is the outcome i want - cinematic stabilised shots.

Then again, there is always the iPhone 15 to wait for...

Which will turn out to lack a feature you realize you want, so then there’s always the iPhone 16 to wait for.

Only at 2,8k…

No 8k video, no 4k slowmo (120/240fps)
Also 1080 slowmo with 480 / 960 would have been nice

Apple is lacking behind - featurewise.
Videoquality itself is top notch. Btw: why is the aperture getting worse on the new cams?

How about the Y axis? and leveling?
Another problem is that the field of view is substantially narrowed, so you don’t get the benefit of a gimbal for stabilisation with less cropping. It’s nice, but no replacement for a gimbal.

Neat, so basically it’s like GoPro’s HyperSmooth?

If they add a feature for the Ultra wide lens to perform similarly to the GoPro Max Lens Mod, that would basically for me negate the need for a GoPro which I already don’t use that often.

This is what I was thinking although I have a dusty Osmo action laying around. Might be put up on the marketplace soon
