The best advice I've seen so far in this thread. The carriers are way more motivated to give you something extra for your old phone if they can induce you to stay with them.
Indeed. Last time around, T-Mobile was literally giving away new models if you traded in either of the previous two generations, and even with an 5s trade-in like I did there was a huge discount on a 7. Way more than I could get even on eBay.

At those prices you might as well keep your phone for back up or gift it to someone. But if you really want to sell it just go through Swappa.

What a joke, who would ever do this? You can get almost 50%-75% more selling it yourself. Total rip off!

You can also get 0% by selling it yourself if you're robbed / tricked. This is what many people are scared of and avoid. Not everyone is savvy enough to understand how to sell things online or person-to-person without any issues.

I suspect many people who use these services are like me and just don't want to fuss around with eBay or similar.

Comparing the Gazelle price, for example, for my iPhone 7 it looks like after fees and all, I could clear about an extra $100 by selling on eBay. For me that is just not worth the risk or hassle of using eBay.

I get why people want to sell themselves and squeeze out everything they can from the sale, but I just don't want to mess around with it.

If you don't need it day one, then hold out until at least Jan 1 to see what promos come down. I think Target had a good deal too.

Solid advice.

My wife and I upgraded both of our 5s to 6s at Target in March of 2016. We got a great deal of $150 Target gift cards for each of us ($300 total). Of course, gift cards are not the same as cash but my wife loves shopping at Target anyways so the deal suited us well, and it was six months after the product launch.

Honestly, the older I get, the less I need to have the latest and greatest the soonest. Good things come to those who can wait. YMMV.

That's why I always meet in a public location, never backed in a corner, I'm the one closest to the exit and carry my ccw.

I've always had good luck selling my phones on Craigslist/letgo/OfferUp. Hope to do the same this year.

Last year Verizon took a 6 for $650 in upgrade credit applied over 24 months towards a 7.

I'd wait for carrier deals if I had a 6s.

what about the apple store credit thing they were doing for people to sign up pay like 40 a month and were eligible for an upgrade when the new phones came out? do you just trade in the iPhone and get the other and start paying?

Wish they would do that this year, I would buy 2 iphone X. They usually don’t start that until later though, and if the rumors are correct, the iPhone X will be in very very short supply.

What's the best bet if your iPhone is dead? My 128GB 6 recently croaked. Sell on eBay for parts?

Should have gone back to the 6. Since there weren't any real upgrades worth the expense after that cycle, I'm sure there are a lot of us in that boat.

No thanks. I'll sell my iPhone on Swappa and get about twice as much more. These trade in values are a joke.

is it better to sell outright or try to get something from a carrier if your contract is up? I have an iPhone 6 16GB so not sure it's worth much.
