I love that despite all that open space Wayne Ma can't figure out where the clock would go in his renders. 🤣

I doubt Apple will do the left corner because that eliminates half the DI's displayable information; lefties will like it because the Dynamic Island would be closer to their dominant hand. This is more realistically what it will look like.

There has been so much noise over the notch in years, such an insignificant thing, on any scale. People really have so little going on in their lives to care about this and progress of tech has slowed to a crawl for it to make constant news.

I hope Apple doesn't remove the Dynamic Island, it's one of the most useful features for me. Or, if Apple removes it, they replace it with something equally as useful or better.

No hate, but whats the reason you're not a fan of it?

I simply don‘t like the look of it and prefer the slimmed down notch like on the 16e. The DI doesn‘t save space but rather the opposite as it protrudes further down into the viewing area. It looks unique and it‘s a nice idea to hide the front facing camera and Face ID equipment, I give Apple that.

The more I use my 16 the more I hate that huge hole in the screen, especially because THERE'S NO FREAKING OPTION to disallow content under it.
And with the upcoming fugly UI design, I'm so close to sell it and jump ship...

I’d take an off-set hole punch over a smaller Dynamic Island any day. I might even prefer that over a centred hole punch, although I’m not sure how that’d work in terms of Apple’s UI preferences. Either way though, whether off-set or centred, I’d prefer a hole punch over the Dynamic Island. I guess one reasonable compromise would be to have a centred hole punch that can morph into the Dynamic Island when there is content to display, but which shrinks back down to a hole punch when not in use.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

However, it’s moot for me for the next several years since I will be getting the 17 Pro Max with likely (?) the same Dynamic Island we have now, and probably won’t upgrade again until 2029. And according to Young, I won’t get the under screen Face ID then either.

OTOH, I’m really looking forward to the new camera upgrades for the 17 Pro Max though, with 48 MP Fusion telephoto, giving us these “optical” zoom options:

0.5X / 1X / 2X / 3.5X / 7X

With Apple I'm always going to believe the rumor with least progress and innovation. That being said I expect iPhone 18 pro to have a DI that's maybe like a fraction of hair smaller, and for Apple to claim it's wonderful innovation, and tout it as a marvel of ingenuity.

There are two possible things and which one you think likely depends on how much you think Apple wants to drive upgrades.

1. The 20th Anniversary phone in 2027 will get underscreen FaceID and a holepunch screen along with other impressive design upgrades.
2. Apple wants you to upgrade twice which means underscreen Face ID will come first and the other impressive redesign again in 2027.

But relying so heavily on rumors, of which there are always contradictions, can only affect your mood negatively.

Isn't this the same mockup that pops up every year in forums for the past 5 years at least?

The screen cutout is the size that it is because of the array of FaceID components so any further miniaturization of that array is pretty impressive.

People bitch because they didn't like the dynamic island, so rumors say Apple is making it smaller and moving it more out of the way and people still bitch. Shocker.

I use an S24 galaxy for work, and having a camera cutout centered is actually not bad, I wouldn't mind that. Having it off to the left would probably be weird at first, until my brain gets used to it.

Come back next week to find out who goes home with a rose, and who goes home with a punch-sized hole in their heart… on the next “Dynamic Island.”

Brought to you by Apple TV+

Also, thank goodness for these renders. Never would have been able to imagine it without them. Or by, you know, looking at other phones.

I doubt Apple would do this, it's very unlike them and not on point in terms of design / symmetry. I can imagine perhaps a slightly smaller Dynamic Island, as it's so characteristic of the iPhone now.

If Apple does add a weird corner hole punch camera, I'll definitely skip that generation of iPhones. Absolutely hideous and as bad as a design decision as the notch on current MacBooks.
