I'm a Pocket Casts lifetime Plus member, so it's hard for me to give that up. I should use the browser version more than I do.

I’m sticking with the free option because the 45€/yr actual price is too much and I don’t need the extra features.

I like the look of all of this! Wonder if anyone with the beta can clarify some bits I'm confused about...

The player is displaying show page art, not the cover art, right? What shows if a podcast doesn't have show page art? The article says chapter art does show on this screen, what does that look like? What about shows with individual episode art?

In the article, there's two images showing for a podcast in the up next screen, the small one in the corner looks to be the show art, I'm guessing the big one is art for that episode specifically? And the MacRumors show doesn't have one because they don't do episode art? This article says the UI inherits color from the shows, but then the shows in their screenshots are... grey and grey! If anyone can share some screenshots of it working with more interesting show art, that would be cool!

I like the new UI of the Music app with the player appearing to float, kind of disappointed this doesn't have it.

Lack of smart speed (automatically trimming silence) means I will continue to use Overcast for now, despite its aging UI.

I would just be happy if they bring back the ability to use Siri to play a particular "station" (playlist of podcasts) while using CarPlay. Why do I have to touch the screen so many times while driving?

Would it kill them to add a repeat button so I don’t have to download sleep sound podcasts that are literally 8 hours long? So many things are only published as “podcast” and not in Music app which actually has a repeat button. I’d like to loop something all night. Looping should be a standard button just like PLAY is.
A current workaround for general release iOS is to add the episode again to your queue, and you can do that numerous times.

So, they moved everything around to make it a shiny new kind of confusing.
It looks similar to Android in quite a few ways now actually 🤣 such as when you're done playing a podcast how it shows the replay icon with length which I kind of prefer.

Apple in iOS 17 has revised several elements of its stock apps, including the Podcasts app. There are a few noteworthy changes to the functionality and design of the app with the update, as detailed below.

The biggest change is a slick new design for the Now Playing screen, which allows the podcast's full show page art – or any episode chapter images – to take over the entire screen.

The playback controls on the bottom half of the screen have also been rejigged. The play speed button has been moved from the bottom left corner of the screen and now sits next to the rewind button.

The sleep timer button has also been moved from the bottom right corner and is now located next to the fast-forward button, so the main bank of controls is more compact with five buttons in the row instead of just rewind, play, and fast-forward. Some buttons also now take on a neat new glow when activated.

The queue interface has changed, too. Whereas previously you swiped up to see if anything was in the Playing Next list, now there's a dedicated queue button at the bottom next to the AirPlay icon.

Pressing it brings up a whole new screen showing any queued episodes as a list. You can swipe to remove an episode from the queue or clear the list, and if there are no episodes up next it will tell you that nothing is queued.

The Up Next carousel at the top of the Listen Now screen features redesigned cards that add a color shade to go with the podcast's art, and they feature a new three-dot options menu icon, a new compact playback indicator that shows if you have started a podcast but not finished it, as well as the episode's length.

The same indicator can also be found in the Up Next screen, where the "Play Next" and "Play Last" options have been replaced with "Add to Queue."

In iOS 16, if you've completed an episode in a podcast's episodes list, it just says "Played" below the episode summary. In iOS 17, that's been replaced by a replay icon and the episode length. A checkmark now also sits next to the date above the episode title, indicating that you've listened to it.

I was really hoping they would add some sort of a smart speed or voice boost. My understanding is the audio recording app has similar tech. It would really make a difference in being able to listen to more podcasts.

Overcast is the way to go when it comes to podcasts on Apple devices
This! I have been using Overcast for several years now and LOVE it.

I actually tried downloading Apple's podcast app yesterday after hearing all these updates. Deleted it within 1 min. The UI is all over the place and the features and user experience is so much better on Overcast. The developer is also an Apple enthusiast and has a great podcast for anyone interested! The Podcasts app has always been a mess to navigate. I'm still confused after 1 year of use, and I'm usually a power user in everything I use...

I hope it's better with iOS 17.
My iPhone is still on iOS 14.4x because I didn't like the changes introduced to Podcast app with iOS 14.5.

Suspect Apple redesigns apps with focus on how to increase more revenue through subscriptions.

I'm one of those Apple idiots who happily uses their software for almost everything. I use Safari, Numbers, Pages, Photos, Calendar, Messages, Preview, etc. And, I use Podcasts. But MY GOD it's ******. Says it does things and then just doesn't (synching across devices); can't see who the guest is on a podcast because it just wants to scroll you the 168 character title of the podcast instead, which you already know; baffling logic about what it plays next that suggests a completely weird way that someone would want to listen… confusing (to me at least) **** about whether you "follow" a podcast vs. download vs. saved. It's like a blender filled with bad ideas and turned on and poured out into a bad interface. I can't think of anything it does right but at least sometimes words come out of it and go in my ear hole.

My problem with the Apple podcasts app is the syncing of podcasts. Sometimes it works for me but most of the time it doesnt as if I listen to one on my phone it wont be reflected as being played on the computer or iPad. I have switched to PocketCasts which does a good job at this

Does it still jump to the most recent episode every time you open the app rather than the oldest episode in the queue or the episode you were in the middle of listening to?

By having the podcast image and background take over the entire screen, unless the background is all black in the first place, this in effect removes dark mode on the player screen. I think this makes it worse.

The podcast I listen to the most is imported from Patreon, and I really wish that they would fix the bug where it reads the low resolution Patreon pfp as the show icon instead of the icon actually posted with the audio…

I knew this was a thing! I’ve mentioned to the creators I sub to that the artwork is low res but didn't think could have been on Apples side the issue lies.

Yeah it’s not likely to get sorted then. Lol

The UI in Apple's podcast app has been such an utter disaster for so long I'm genuinely surprised that anyone who knows that the app store exists still uses it.

I use Pocketcasts. A clean, simple grid of cover art with a dash of colour on the corner if there are new episodes. That's all I need.

I just wish they had a real desktop app instead of the usual bare bones web app garbage.

In what way is the UI exactly an utter disaster.

It has search, you follow podcasts, it has a list of new episodes.

I’m not sure what else you are needing here?
