In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reiterated that Tesla plans to add Apple CarPlay support to its vehicles "in the coming months."

This is easily the biggest news for the regular version of CarPlay in years, should Tesla actually follow through with offering the system in its vehicles.

As noted by Gurman, this would be a stunning reversal for Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, who have long ignored customer requests to implement CarPlay. We shall see what ultimately happens, though. Musk could change his mind at any moment.

Tesla plans to offer the regular, wireless version of CarPlay, rather than the more advanced CarPlay Ultra system, according to Gurman. CarPlay would appear within a window inside of Tesla's broader software interface, he said.

Tesla currently offers Apple Music and Apple Podcasts apps through its own interface.

Has anyone checked in with anyone that does firmware deep-dives on Tesla vehicles, like greentheonly? I haven't seen anything in the Tesla rumor camp, let alone the firmware-hacking camp that would have revealed this by now.

Feels like I'd get this rumor from them first over Bloomberg.

I own a new Tesla and my experience with the UI/Infotainment is that Tesla is years ahead of CarPlay. Unless it will integrate Waze with full self driving capabilities, or even maybe group iMessaging, I can't see why anyone would want to replace the UI with CarPlay. Unless perhaps it doesn't actually replace the entire UI like it does it current vehicles that have CarPlay.

Could be the in the Holidays Update?
Indeed, this may be the case. 2025.44 initial verison just dropped today and some people are receiving it already. This version is the baseline for holiday update with flags being enabled later around XXXX.44.25 or so I expect peoele like greentheonly starting to dive in as they get their hands on it. Exciting to see what is going to be discovered in this :)

I'd prefer no screens at all.

The Carplay look fails to fit into the rest of the car's aesthetic. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

This is a good point.
Another missed opportunity here.

Why not offer paid branding packs that car companies (and third parties) could make?

Precisely. I never understood the craving for car play when honestly Tesla’s system is years ahead of anything Apple offers. Car play was nice when other systems were horrible so CarPlay was nice update but with Tesla, there is simply no competition and it looks like garbage.

Let’s goooo!

Honestly, I’ve never considered buying another car that isn’t a Tesla. Full Self-Driving (FSD) is everything to me! I can’t remember the last time I drove myself; I just let FSD handle everything.

I have driven serval cars that have CarPlay. It is wonderful if you're an apple user. It just feels so much better than the native Tesla experience. So why the big turn around for Tesla? Probably due to declining "luster" of the Tesla brand. The Tesla is very well integrated with my iPhone. It lack of Carplay was a glaring let down.

More pressure on Rivian to allow CarPlay if Tesla does. I’m not a big CarPlay fan over the native Rivian UI but it would be a nice option to have. Wireless CarPlay has been very unreliable in the vehicles I’ve used it in so I’m not particularly interested anymore so long as the native UI is good.

Partially Tesla’s diminished brand thanks to Musk’s extracurriculars, but also because Tesla wants to play big in the rental and self-driving ride share markets and CarPlay allows for an easier way to manage one-off users bringing their apps into the vehicle.

The only reason CarPlay would come to Tesla is to attract new Tesla customers who think they want CarPlay. Any Tesla owner already realizes Tesla’s infotainment system is far better than CarPlay and I’d imagine nearly no current tesla owner genuinely wants or needs CarPlay.
FWIW I’m a long-term Tesla owner who wants CarPlay for messaging and the ability to use apps like overcast. The inability to reply to group messages is incredibly frustrating since like 75% of my messages are group texts.

I am unlikely to use it for navigation, but might try it if Tesla charging gets loaded into Apple Maps the way it is for other cars. Doubt it would win full-time duty though.

You clearly haven’t used both systems if you think CarPlay feels better than the native Tesla experience. It’s not even close.

Yes, the only thing I miss from my other car with CarPlay is better texting. Tesla could improve it, but perhaps never achieve the integration texting has on the iPhone.

The thing is that most automakers are absolutely terrible at software (e.g., in my previous Volvo). But that is one core strength of Tesla, so CarPlay is not really needed.

You’re literally arguing that his opinion is wrong, you realise that right?
You realize it’s okay to disagree with other peoples’ opinions, right? In this case I disagree strongly enough (ie. the difference is stark enough in *my opinion*) that I actually don’t believe this person has tried both systems.

“You’re literally arguing that my opinion doesn’t matter because this person posted their opinion first.” See how that works?
