How does NOT using leather help the environment? I am not being a smart ass just wondering. If the cow is being slaughtered anyway for meat you should use every part of it for something...There are plenty of uses for leather so the industry will not suffer but just curious...

So I guess Hermes is the only traditional watch maker that Apple is able to get a partnership with, eh?

Good for Apple to finally ditch leather. It was funny that even some car manufacturers were more sustainable in this matter
Are they going to remove all the leather seating in the Steve Jobs theater? And anywhere else they have leather, including Apple stores?

it's the same argument i put forwards when vegans buy vegan sausages etc that look and taste just like the real thing. why on earth would a vegan want to eat something that tasted like it was a real animal product.
Because becoming vegan isn't some magical act wherein your tastes immediately change? The closer non-meat products get to tasting like real meat, the lower the barriers to veganism. I don't see why this would be at all a difficult concept.

Apple’s leather bands (and all leather accessories) have faltered since the Series 6 era with the move to painted leather. Even further, they’re essentially landfill fodder; too thin to last, poor quality paint, etc. Apple ceasing their own leather production is a good thing.

Hermès hand produces all of their leather products at considerably lower volume than the mass production of Apple. They also make products that last, and offer repairs unlike Apple. Hermès has the best leather and leather artisans. It’s kinda their thing.

Reality isn’t black and white; leather isn’t going away and has benefits that no other material can match, might as well source the best option if it suits your needs. The impact of leather production from Hermès is considerably smaller and less wasteful than Apple, the products actually last longer than a year, and the life of them can be extended with available repairs.

Interesting how the M macs and laptops are no longer upgradable and simply landfill each upgrade. 🤔

why would a vegan want to eat something that tastes like cooked animal?
if the thought of eating an animal product goes against their beliefs then why go out of their way to make products that aren't animal based but still taste like one?

they don't want to eat that cute little pig, but god does it taste great.

Production of leather involves toxic chemicals. It might be a foreign concept to you, but you are not only responsible for what you personally do, but also for what you make others do. Apple's CO2 emissions can be reduced by no longer using leather, and instead using post consumer recycled materials.

Demonizing leather is so ridiculous. Apples current bands are like the worst they’ve had. Third party all the way For me now.
Good for you then. Whether Apple's new bands will sell well or not remains to be seen.
Apple is not demonizing leather. They take it out of their portfolio to reduce their CO2 footprint.
Please don't argue that it doesn't. Apple is a trillion dollar company. They know what they are doing.

Are they going to remove all the leather seating in the Steve Jobs theater? And anywhere else they have leather, including Apple stores?
No longer _manufacturing_ leather products has a positive impact on Apple's CO2 emission balance.
Whatever they have already built into their campus is done and has no bearing on future emissions.
Especially it has nothing to to with having carbon neutral products by 2030.
That's what this is about.

Or every Apple exec. Unless they’ve all removed leather from their wardrobe/home/vehicles etc.
This move is about no longer _manufacturing_ leather products, which has a positive impact on Apple's CO2 emission balance.
Whatever some guy working at Apple has in their wardrobe has no bearing on the company's future emissions.
Especially it has nothing to to with having carbon neutral products by 2030.
That's what this is about

I sense a deal that Apple signed with Hermés that it can't get out of easily.

The uneasy compromise appears to be that Hermés provides fabric bands for Apple to sell on Apple.com

And Hermés still merrily keeps on selling leather bands + Apple Watches on their site.

When the deal expands, I wouldn't expect it to be renewed.

It feels like a relic from the early days of the Apple Watch when Ive was enthusiastic about the Watch as a luxury product - remember the $10k gold original watch?

Oh, you’re not trying to understand. Got it.

Selling something doesn’t make them a watchmaker, they are a leather artisan who have a diverse range of products.
It is only recently with the introduction of the Vaucher stake that movements have reverted back to in house.
Before that you may as well have bought a Swatch…
Ok, they’re not a watchmaker but they make watches. And it’s “only with the introduction of the Vaucher stake that movements have reverted back to in house.” Thank you for whatever this exchange has been.

Whilst I'm all for the carbon benefits of alternative materials, if we're still at a point where we raise livestock for meat, milk, whatever, it feels like it would just be wasteful not to still make use of the leather. So long as the conditions that animal has had during its life have been as positive and natural as possible of course. It feels like its all about balance rather than extremes in any one direction.

Then we all should be glad that Apple stopped making them.
Which is why I never bought the Apple garbage. They barely protected the phone anyway.

Bellroy make lovely cases and Beyza makes beautifully made pouches. No good most of the time, but the leather quality is lovely.
