I've noticed that some of the HGST drives sold by OWC come with no manufacturer warranty. For example, https://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0S04007/ comes with only a warranty from OWC. Are these some kind of refurb unit? anything to be concerned with here?
If you're concerned about that, do this instead: - buy a "bare" drive from any of the major drive vendors (amazon, newegg, etc.) - buy a drive enclosure, either 2.5" or 3.5" - assemble the drive yourself (usually takes nothing more than a screwdriver, some cases just snap together without any tools needed at all). I prefer drives that I build myself to "store-bought" ones...
OWC probably buys them from HGST in bulk as if they were an OEM, so the same way you'd take a defective disk that came in your Mac to Apple for service, you'd need to contact OWC for the warranty.
My main concern is if there's something about how these drives are selected for OWC that would make them more prone to failure.
I bought a 8tb Deskstar nas from OWC this week. It arrived in a retail box. When I check the warranty on HGST website it says “The drive is not valid for warranty through HGST. Please return product to your point of purchase.”. I didn’t know HGST sold retail boxed drives without a warranty. I thought OEM drives were always bare. --- Post Merged, Jun 1, 2018 --- Here’s a link to the owc warranty terms. Only applies to select HGST models. https://eshop.macsales.com/Service/warranty/3-year-new-replacement-warranty.cfm --- Post Merged, Jun 1, 2018 --- OWC does use HGST drives in some of their enclosures. For example a 32tb configuration uses four of the HGST 8tb drives. https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB3IVT32.0S/?fullDetails
I also just picked up an 8tb hgst. Also came in a full retail box which I wasn't expecting. Drive was dated jun-17. I've had good experience with OWC warranty in the past. So I think the drives are good deal.
