hi guys im currently doing architecture at uni and need a new computer, the 09 imac is a little old now. What i wanted to ask is that im a little torn in my choice of computer, i want something with a strong processor as well as a GPU and my two choices have boiled down to and alienware alx or mac pro.

the alienware has a 560ti card and is a quadcore i7 (new)

though i have read your able now to support the same card on the mac pros

i have to work in windows 50% (3dsmax and revit) and mac 50% (all the other programs that work on osx lol) also but i dont want to move back to windows i moved away from it for a reason lol

i was going to as which is the best one and how long can the mac pro last

    Thanks

p.s i know they havent updated the pro but im not bothered thanks :)

If you're willing to practice monogamous computing, a Mac Pro will outlast you. And if you're like most of us, you can pimp it in 2-4 years and look for something with rounder handles :)

Frankly, unless you need Xeons running OS X natively, a Mac Pro is a poor investment as you are paying way more for those Xeons than you realistically should have to. In 2010 when all of the technology in the current Mac Pro was new, it would've been worth the money. Now, not so much. If you really need Westmere over Nahalem AND you need OS X, fine, go with a 2010/2012 Mac Pro. Otherwise, I'd look for a 2009 model. And with the money left over, I'd also pick up one of the new non-Retina MacBook Pros as those are, on the other hand, a great investment right now.
