have tmp / var / etc folders (all aliases) in my root folder. How did they appear and how can I hide them once more.

Is this an indicator of a more serious problem brewing ?

    Thanx

if they're just aliases you can just throw them away.

not an indication of something bad, it's easy to make aliases by accident

Don't throw these folders away. I have seen many times, especially after using Disk Utility to restore a drive from an external HDD, that these normally hidden folders become visible and for some reason the OS represents them as aliases. They are not aliases but are the actual folders used at the basic level of the BSD subsystem. If you delete them, your system will not restart.

I have the same issue here after using Disk Utility - any way to hide them again as they are all greyed out, and I would prefer to not to see them?
