Hi,

I will buy airtag for myself. All family members use apple and we are in family share. My wife can track my mobile phone or my apple watch from her phone. I do not want her to able to track my airtag ,while keeping my phone on "find my". So, this must me hidden to other family members. Is this possible to do ?

Yes, this is how AirTags currently work. They are only paired to your Apple ID, and no one in Family Sharing can see them. However, if your wife or family members are around the AirTag while you are not, they could potentially get an unknown AirTag notification (and/or hear it beep) and find it. There is no way around that.

It's also worth noting that a lot of people are wanting to do the opposite of you. You never know if Apple will release an update to allow AirTags to be shared with family members. So while it works the way you want it to now, it may not in the future.

Are there trust issues going on within the family? Why bother having an Air Tag at all if one doesn't want the wife or the family to know about the travels/coverage of the item where the Air Tag is attached....?

If one wants to be truly private and secretive I would guess that there is always the option of developing a new, additional and private Apple ID and associating the Air Tag with that and nothing else, so then the wife and the family would be none the wiser with regard to the movements of the Air Tag.....?

The case scenario is my airtag will be hidden in my backpack, and when it is at home i am not always around it. Unless, I trigger signal from my mobile phone, does she get random airtag notifications ? If this i like that then this is useless.

My wige is againist airtags, she thinks it will make my mind lazy ,but i am frequent traveller and i carry my passports, a good sum of money, my macbook and other valuable things in my backpack. I cant risk losing it.

I have an airtag in my backpack and I still left it at home on accident today LOL

If the backpack stays home while you are not, I think it'll be fine, but not 100% sure. If it was in a vehicle or something that your wife takes, then yes, she would be notified.

My friend has AirTags on his dogs. When I dog-sit at his place, I don't hear any beeping or get notifications (but that could just be a coincidence). When I take them to my place to dog-sit, then I do. It's part of the anti-stalking feature.

We have ~10 AirTags across 3 apple accounts in our household and the only time any of us get the unknown AirTag notifications is when one moves with us, without its “owner’s” phone. The two most common examples are when I take my wife’s car somewhere with her keys but without her, or when my daughter walks home from school with me (AirTag in backpack, no phone).

If it’s just sitting at home outside of when you’re with it you shouldn’t have any issues IMO.

This seems like a silly thing to quibble over. I’d never stop my partner from getting something I didn’t like, or want him to feel like he has to hide it from me. If she’s absolutely against AirTags, there are other alternatives. You could get a backpack with Find My tracking built in, though it’s basically the same thing and costs a lot more.

Also, since you carry a lot of valuables and travel frequently, I wouldn’t rely on the AirTag’s “left behind” feature if that’s what you’re looking for. While it does work, it’s not quick enough for something like this. I recently did some traveling and put AirTags in my backpack and carry-on. I left them behind with my family one time while I went to look for food. I didn’t get notified until 5-10 minutes later when I was already way at the other end of the airport. If you want something more immediate, a Tile might be a better choice (or used along with the AirTag).
