I try to hide the hard drive icon from the users. How do I do this? I'm relatively new to Mac. I see that when I click on Finder --- Preferences, I uncheck the show hard disks on the desktop. How do I do this permanently?

Also, how can I modify items in the Finder?

Much thanks,

Finder - > Preferences - > General tab - > Uncheck "Hard Disks"

EDIT: I reread your post and am unclear on what you're asking. If you're looking to hide it in a finder window, choose sidebar from the preferences and hide it.

Like ClassicBean says yes you can "hide" the hard drive from the sidebar and desktop, but I'm not sure I see the point. Yes your users will lose the quickest means of accessing the hard drive, but it's still only a click of the Finder icon in the dock away. Open Finder Window + Columns View = Total hard drive visibility.
I'm probably completely misunderstanding what you're trying to accomplish though.
