My Apple ID is an old corporate email address I had years ago. I just saw that 'Hide my email' is forwarding responses to that address. It's not on a server, and as far as I know, it's not being used. So this opens up an issue. I no longer own the domain, and if someone registers it, and sets up the same name, they will get my emails. So I'm back in the box of your Apple ID can;t be an Apple domain account, so then what, and changing an Apple ID is filled, or has been filled with pain and frustration.

So, now what?

Should I try to register that domain again and reset up the account, or invite pain the and torture of changing my Apple ID?

This whole thing kinda sucks. Why does Apple have such a hard on about not using Apple domain addresses for Apple ID's? I guess it doesn't matter, they do, so I have some thinking, and investigation to do to get this resolved. Yikes...

I wonder how many others are in the same boat, and may not know it.

Oh, did I luck out. It's still registered, and in my NetSol account. Apparently it's been renewed automagically for years. Make me wonder what else is doing that, but now I need an email server to support that domain.

Is there email server software to run on a mac that I could install rather than paying for hosting?

Thanks for any leads...

I've used it with my custom domain for months now. Works great and is already included in the iCloud subscription cost.

So the question now is where to host the domain (which you control) email?

You weren't using it before…are you saying you want to actively use this email address now? Or, is it that you just want to get the emails that are being sent to it, including the "hide my emails" being forwarded?

I did use it. Had an Exchange server, in-house. It's been gone for about 6 years, which is why I was surprised to still have the domain. I guess I'll use iCloud, for now, since I'm already paying for it. The Exchange server could be hooked back up, but it runs SBS 2008, I believe. Ancient and asking for problems, but maybe not as buggy as current incarnations of Exchange from what I hear. *shrug*

Hmm...

It sounds like I then have to use that domain for email, so all my messages will come from that domain, and that email address? I'm not ready to go that far. Wow...

Unless I'm missing something?

It figures...

I do not have the AppleID address setup for email, so I went to a child account from that AppleID, and I get the dreaded message:

This email is already in use with another Apple ID.

No poop, Sherlock...

iCloud+ isn't going to work. Good idea though...

I didn’t set it up with iCloud but if I remember correctly you’ll still be able to use your original iCloud email, in addition to the one you’ll setup

Unfortunately it's a dead issue now anyway. It would have been interesting to try it out...

I wonder if a Raspberry Pi could run an email server. Hmm...

Maybe I’m not following, but why can't you change your Apple ID to another email address that you use? I’ve done it a couple times in the past and it was painless.

It's painless now? The wife changed her Apple ID (years ago now), and lost access to most of her music, and books. It was a mess to recover from that. She still occasionally has issues with content that was purchased earlier. She had to go through *all* of her content and see what account it came from. She gave up around 100. The MIL changed hers too, and it was a disaster. It kept coming up asking for the password from her old Apple ID, and that would trigger a password prompt for her new Apple ID. (I found out an 80 year-old woman is a very crafty and determined hacker!)

I have generally really tried to avoid changing the Apple ID email account, but now realizing Apple is helpfully sending emails to it, now need to get it back. Thanks Apple, but I guess I should have seen it coming. I *SHOULD* have had access and support for it all along, but the spam was swamping my Exchange server.

Maybe Ubuntu is an option.

That hasn’t been my experience, but I get that YMMV. If you don’t want to change your Apple ID, you can still change where Hide My Email forwards to in Settings… (Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> Hide My Email -> Forward To)

I tried that too. We can't forward to an Apple domain email address! How dumb is that? So I would need to redirect it to another 'outside' email address, and have that account forward the messages back behind Apple's iron curtain.

They can almost make me believe the whole 'Apple ID can't be an Apple domain address' thing they are on, but not forwarding Hide My Email messages to an Apple domain account is just nuts! Verging on insane, IMO. WTH? It seems, for those caught behind it, needlessly user abusive. It has no point, to require what they are doing. Good grief...

I give up!

I was ready to go night-night yesterday, and get a notification:

IMG_1229.jpg

Which is, as I said, after getting the 'It's not working, and you are exposed!' message earlier. And, of course, nothing has changed...

It's like trying to pick up mashed potatoes with chopsticks. I give up...

I just changed my Apple ID and I didn’t lose anything at all. It wasn’t hard and you just have to log out of your devices and log in with the new email.
