The yellow button minimizes only the current window (unless OPTION is held down).
A minimized window is placed on the Dock, so it occupies Dock space.
There's also a Minimize item in the Window menu of many/most apps,
well, the ones that have a Window menu. It usually has a cmd-key.
Hide hides the entire application (all windows).
A hidden app occupies no Dock space (other than its existing Dock icon).

Ah, thanks for the breakdown. Oddly, I had a 'setup' call with Apple. And, I asked about the Hide and Yellow button, the Agent struggled to explain it. So, again, thanks.
Are you saying there is also an option when an app is minimized, if you rest the mouse on the app in the Dock, it will show a small preview window of what is open? Any idea where that setting is? Thanks
EDIT: I figured it out. If one has 'Minimize windows into application icon', you will not see a 'preview' of the app in the Dock...
