Apple has made everything on my external monitor very tiny and I think I may be having a bad day.
But seriously, I've tried Retina DisplayMenu and the newer/fancier BetterDisplay, and in both of these selecting HiDPI on my 3840x1440 monitor does absolutely nothing. I sit further back from this one and have been using it like a makeshift TV so HiDPI improves usability massively.
Edit: I fixed it by messing around with some of the advanced settings in BetterDisplay! Seems like a very capable app.
