The 15'' MBP is probably the thinnest and lightest 15'' out there, if you have trouble carrying it around in a school day, you should think about hitting the gym :p

haha.. mostly size which concerns me ;)

I know the OP seems to be against it, but I would still consider the high end MacBook Pro with high res antiglare display. Then upgrade to 8GB RAM after you purchase. The graphics card on the low end 15" is not good at all in comparison to the top end 15". Also, you get 1GB of GDDR5 memory instead of 256MB in the low end. The difference in graphics is huge. Add that you get a 200MHz boost in processor speed I think that it's worth the extra $300 IMHO.

Well.. As I'm not going to use it for gaming purposes (except games which requires ram/cpu and not graphics), I see no point in taking the high end.. I get some more l3 cache (which is nice) and 200MHz. Will I be able to feel the difference? I doubt it.. And then I get a lot better GFX, but for what purpose when I'm not going to use it?

And if I were to spend 300$ extra, would't it be better to buy an opti bay and SSD disk? :)

Just my thought atm when the apple store is down..

I think youd be happy with the decision. As long as you're prepared to turn the settings a click or two down from ultra on your future games.

The biggest adjustment will be going from desktop to laptop in terms of usability. If it's an option, i'd reccomend keeping your monitor and periphs when you sell your desktop so that you can use the macbook in a desktop style configeration when you're at home base.

Good luck

first of all sorry to mess all your thoughs.. but for me the 15" is too big to carry everyday.

3 years ago i had a LG 15.4" laptop. For me it was ok carrying it for 3 blocks (distance from the university-home). I don't know if i'm getting old (i'm 24 nowadays) but for me, carrying it everyday now wouldn't be ok as it used to be. Maybe that's because i'm getting used to the Air. My bro has a VAIO 15" laptop and for me it is more like a desktop than a laptop :p

If i were you, i'd go with the 13 MBP.. then later on you can upgrade it to 8gb+SSD.. and it will be future proof for some time, will be fast as the Air(because of the SSD) and will be light enought for you to carry everywhere. And it costs a lot less than the 15".

As long as the store is down it's okay to mess it all up again ;)

As someone mentioned earlier en the thread, the 15" is the thinest and lightest of all 15" on the market, so comparing it to your old LG wouldn't be fair, I know nothing about the VAIO :)
And the extra workspace I get with the high res will be valueable, especially when I just sold my whole desktop, a guy picks it up an hour from now..

So now I only have my laptop in the future..

How is having two documents in word open side by side on the 13" btw, is it readable?

I can't believe some people think the 15" is too heavy.. I mean I hike with my camera in my hand (or on the tripod) for 10 miles at a time sometimes, and it weighs 4lbs.

My point is there is some give and take, or compromises so to speak. Good luck with your choice.

15" it is ;)

Just ordered the base 15" with high res anti glare.

Thanks a lot for all your inputs! :)

Don't wanna start a discussion here, but you can fingure out why I find the 15" too heavy: my sole computer is an 13" Ultimate Air. Anything else for me is too heavy =P

But yeah, the 15" MBP is one of the thinest and lightest laptops in the market, but for ME is too big if I need to carry it everyday.

Well, the order is placed.. So guess I'll have to do some extra push ups before recieving my new MBP ;) But thank you for your opinion though, ordered the MBA for my girlfriend yesterday :)

Don't go with the damn Xbox

If you wouldn't settle with a MBA 'cause of obsolete hardware, why go with the equally dated hardware of a 360/PS 3?

The 360 has a GPU similar to the ATI Radeon X1900 (that thing is 6 years old!).
The PS3 has a GPU similar to the Nvidia 7800 (also 6 years old !).

The PC you'd like to replace is even more of a power house than those consoles (console games run mostly at 720p resolution ...). Plug in a more recent GPU (like the Radeon 6950 - this card can be soft modded (really easy procedure) to a Radeon 6970 (lower regions of High End GPU)), and you're system is future proof for like a year or two.

I know I know, just downgraded my card one month ago from my old 4870X2.. The thing is that I'm soon going to be away for half a year which means that I can't afford a GFX upgrade before and I have no money when I get back - .. Furthermore while I'm away my PC will loose a lot of value even not being used, so I found it to be a good solution selling it now...

I know it's an awesome machine which just needs a GFX update and I'm good to go with everything maxed out in all games..

I'll get my new MBP and see whether or not I can live without the gaming option, which I'm pretty sure I can until i leave for Korea :)

I have the option of buying hardware (along with the upgrades for my MBP I mentioed) when I'm in Korea and ship it back to DK, which I consider doing in the end of my stay.. It will possible to build a very nice rig for around 1000$ if I buy a mix of new and used..

200 mhz is hardly noticeable. But yeah get the high end
