I'd be shocked if this device was subsidized anywhere in the USA or Canada. Apple will sign deals with carriers in developing markets for a reduced cost version, but the rest of us will need to purchase an unlocked version at full cost.

If it is really what the rumors claim it won't likely be subsidized anywhere. That's part of the logic for this device. Carriers in developing countries are all pay as you go and thus you have to buy devices at full price. And folks in said countries can't afford a $600+ phone

really does look cheap to me.

It looks cheap to me too but are you saying that's a bad thing? What makes you think that's not intentional?

When I was in college, I worked at a grocery store for a few years. Back then (early 90s) the industry was diverging rapidly between two types of stores--the high-end, higher cost, luxury grocery stores and the low-end bargain store. I worked at the latter type and I remember the entrance to the place always looked badly kept. Just a long eyesore of a wall of groceries with crappy looking signs and none of it very tidy. I mentioned to the store manager one day how much of bad impression that must make on customers when they walk in and how we should make it look nicer, and he laughed. He said the people we're serving (bargain hunters) see that messy entrance and it confirms that they're in the right kind of store, the kind of store where they're not jacking up prices in order to afford to pay people to tidy up the shelves.

In other words, the messy, low-end look of the place was intentional, meant to communicate to customers right away that this was a place for bargains, not pretentious, high-end shoppers with cash to burn.

So, yeah, the phone looks cheap. I don't doubt that's intentional.

Wait a minute - If they've already built a phone that looks identical to what they are claiming is the budget iPhone, how do we know it wasn't just their design all along? They never turned the screen of the "iPhone" on.

Bingo. Folks aren't thinking about things like that when someone claims to have a device.

Although in this case it's more they claim they have seen it or the confirmed details and perhaps got a back plate and mocked the rest up.

But still, how do we know they aren't lying about all that and just followed the unconfirmed rumors to create this and claim it is legit as a sales tool for their android phone

I'll just keeping hanging on to my 4s until the do finally bring out a proper sized screen phone.

'Proper sized' is really just an opinion. Many folks are just fine with the size Apple is producing. If you aren't then perhaps it's time for you to buy something else that is your proper size

----------

So fake. A budget iPhone makes no sense.

Get the 4 for.. You guessed it $0.

A budget iPhone makes no sense and even Cook has stated it makes no sense.

You presume that the 4 or even 4s would still be for sale when the next iPhone releases.

Umm, reading comprehension? The original poster said it would outsell every other smartphone model. NOT every other smartphone COMBINED. Umm, duh.

It's a pathetic thing to say and pointless

Say there are 100 different types of sweets for sale by different sweet makers.

Every sweet maker sells 100 each of their sweets.

In total 10,000 sweets are sold.

But Apple managed to sell 105 sweets out of the 100,000 sold

They have the best selling sweet.

So big whoop to that. 9895 sweets sold were not Apple sweets

It's a pathetic thing to struggle to grasp hold on in a terribly weak way to try and prove yours was the most liked sweet.

Esp when 3/4 of the sweets were all of a flavor that was not Apple flavor.

It's utter desperation to use figures like that.

The I sheep argument.....classic.

-1 for saying "kit"..barf.

as for the rest of your diatribe -- as a unique and beautiful snowflake, you should consider a speaking tour. you know, to enlighten others and teach them to free themselves in the glorious fashion you have. please consider it. they need you.

there is no bare metal antenna on the iPhone 5 -- the antenna arrays are behind the glass windows.

take your own advice.

Wow, how to follow that nonsense ?????

The only thing I noticed is that someone should have cleaned the camera's sensor before taking the photos or shooting the video. Or, at the very least, edited out the dust spots in post.

Depending on what the colours look like I may pick one up as a secondary iPhone for travelling :)

If this is the budget iPhone, I think it looks pretty good actually. I like the curves around the shell and can imagine it feels better to hold than the iPhone 5.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. To use another analogy... There are many car makers, each makes multiple models. I'm not sure which specific model is the absolute top-seller, but I bet each of the other car manufacturers wishes they had a model that sold as briskly. AND (here's the REAL kicker)... I would wager that the top sold car model is one of the very cheapest.. obviously not a Bugati. I would posit that this makes it all the more impressive that the Apple iPhone outsells any other model of smartphone, considering that it is far from the cheapest. Could you imagine how giddy BMW would be if one of their top-tier most expensive models were ALSO the top sold car model on the planet? At any rate, whether I change your mind or not... I believe it is still a completely fair accomplishment/achievement.. it speaks highly of the company & is worth bragging about.

Cheaply made and made to be produced quickly and cheaply. Yes. I am sure the iPhone takes so very long in comparison.

Regardless - I stand by my personal preference of functionality over how fast a phone can be put together or whether it's plastic or metal.

Its more than the hardware and apple hands down make the best hardware. Its the user experience. Its having the latest software, its having a great warranty, its having apps made for your phone, its the accessory market, functionality with your vehicle, its being able to resell your old phone for a good price, its so much more than the cheap plastic most androids are made with. Yes android does a lot of function it just does not of it very good.

Thats a terrible analogy. BMW is fine being the ultimate driving machine and will always put extra effort to remain there. Apple is the same way and always will be. Yes you can buy a Chevy thats as fast and has the same equipment but it always will be a chevy.

Because that would be a lot of work for something not available until Sept 1, when possibly we will have seen the actual iPhone by then. If they were to pull this off, it should be available now.

But what is the point anyway? It looks like any other white smartphone. The externals are only interesting when trying to figure out the internals. The OS is what makes smartphones different. Who give a darn what the external of my iPhone looks like? All my iPhones have probably see daylight a total of a month. They're entirely encased in rubber. I don't understand why smartphones are make out of slippery smooth metal or plastic, with no bumps or grooves whatsoever to hold on to. Seems like the more expensive a phone is, the more slippery it is. A little self serving to the companies making them and repairing them or reselling them. Used to be cell phones were made of a tacky rubbery plastic. It didn't really ding, or scratch and it wasn't slippery. Why can't there be a small little rubbler edge on a smart phone to grab onto? Perhaps they'd like you to drop it. Hmmm.

Mostly subjective. But you aren't going to change your opinion or mine.

I will comment on the resell point and software points. I don't care. Look - I own iPhones and Android phones. I buy phones for what they can do WHEN I buy them not for what they MIGHT do in the future. Further - I don't care what the resell value is because I don't buy them to resell. I buy them to use. And often I donate the phone to someone after I'm done with it. See - that's my use case. It's subjective. And that goes for both iPhones and the ONE Android phone I currently have.

But again - you aren't going to change my opinion nor I you.

Car analogies don't work. Both you and the OP should stop trying to shoehorn a bad analogy to fit the cellphone market.

No, the iPhone 4 costs $450. Oh, you mean with a 2 year contract? Ohhhh! So, the phone MUST be free, even though you are signing a two year contract for overpriced cellular service!

Got news for you - the cellular industry outside of the United States doesn't work like that. You have to buy the device outright in most countries - there is no such thing as a contract for cell service. A $450 phone isn't going to sell in the developing world. That's what this "cheap" iPhone is targeting.

Maybe you should be more careful with your electronics? I've had each iPhone since day one with no cases and no issues.

just another dirty trick by apple to make more money, i wonder will they be able to make people fool again to buy this stupid device.
What pray tell is wrong with making money? Have you ever worked for a poor person or a poor company?

I think it's the politicians that are trying to demonize success and divide us against each other.

Rofl no. The politicians are merely pawns of the big businesses. They're there to protect their interests. The businesses are the true ruling class of America, but all of our products come from corporations and if that commenter is condemning Apple for wanting to be profitable, he may as well condemn everyone else (microsoft, hp, htc, google, facebook, dell, asus, acer, sony, samsung etc.)

ur incorrect either way. samsung has the largest world market share.

It's actually not pointless at all. Although it's no longer true, if Apple sells more iphones than any other manufacturer sells their product, then it shows clearly, the iphone is more popular than any other single product.

It totally fits. Its why cheap cars shoehorn horsepower into sub par cars. Because buyers just want the numbers. Doesn't matter how long it lasts or how good it is. As long as someone can say my car has 350 horsepower or I have a octacore cpu cellphone. That octacore cpu does nothing special if the body is crap.

You can justify the analogy all you want. A phone is a phone and a car is a car. They simply aren't the same. They aren't used the same. They aren't sold in the same way or using the same sales model. Nor the same sales cycle.

But go ahead - use it if it makes you feel better or leads you to believe you have a "premium" device.

ETA: Not going to respond further. Why? Because none of this is germane to the original thread topic. And I still believe that regardless of whether this design is accurate or not - or low end or high end - it's a nice design.
