It is a new release 10.13 not an update of 10.12. Go to the app store, purchase 10.13 at no cost and download.

Downloaded and installed with no problems on my 2016 MacBook....everything went smoothly. Today I just received the BTO 2017 i7 16 GB RAM MacBook I ordered on the first of the month and, yep, first thing I had to do was to download and install High Sierra and various other updates! LOL! Again, everything went smoothly and of course now I am still setting up the machine so haven't really put her through all her paces yet except to notice that, yes, the keyboard on this new machine definitely seems better than on the 2016! Happy about that although it wasn't a primary focus when deciding to get the 2017 rMB.

One surprise was that the machine boots up when I raise the lid -- totally unexpected and my older MacBook (purchased in August 2016) does not do this. Something I hadn't seen mentioned in posts about the rMB, although I had with regard to the recent MacBook Pros......

I just noticed this on the 2017 I got tonight... was weird, it powered on as soon as I raised the lid.

Yes. I saw somewhere -- I think on an Apple support page, maybe? -- that the powering-on-when-lid-is-opened is new to the MacBook in 2017, while it has been a feature of the 2016 MacBook Pros and of course the 2017 MacBook Pros. I'm still getting used to it -- in some ways it is convenient but in other ways it can be annoying if I just want to open the lid of the computer but not start up the machine right away. For example, when I first got the machine I didn't open it right away while I did some other things and then decided to go ahead and lift the lid, at least have a look but I wasn't quite ready to begin the process of setting her up yet. So I open the lid and -- surprise!! Machine turns on...... Ack! I found myself going ahead and setting the thing up right then and there after all. (In hindsight I realize now that I could have simply used the keyboard to Command-Quit and then shut down, but didn't think of that at the time. For the most part, though, it probably is a convenient feature, once the user becomes accustomed to it!

OK, here, found it:

Start up your MacBook Pro or MacBook by opening it or plugging it in
MacBook Pro models from 2016 and later and MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) start up when you open their lids or connect them to power. Learn more about these features.

If your MacBook Pro (2016 and later) or MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) is powered off, it turns on when you do these things:

  • Open the lid of your Mac, even if it's not connected to power.
  • Connect it to a power adapter while its lid is open.
  • Connect it to a power adapter while its lid is closed and it's connected to an external display.
To start up your MacBook Pro or MacBook by plugging it in, make sure to use an AC adapter that provides sufficient power, like the one that came with the computer. For your computer to start up when you open the lid while it's not connected to power, the battery must have some charge.

Right, I believe Apple's stance at this point is that new MacBooks (regardless of model) from here on out will feature the auto-on boot upon opening the lid. It is interesting that the feature was not extended to older models like the 2016 rMB and MBP.

I personally do like the feature, and if you by some chance need the device open but not powered-on (cleaning?), it's as simple as doing a forced power off or just waiting to click 'Shut Down' once it boots up.

Shifting to the rMB 12'' in general, I haven't personally had a chance yet to check out the 2017 rMB but the reviews and general consensus seem very positive in regards to speed improvements and the gen 2 keyboard. I'm excited for the future of this particular device. Oddly enough I enjoy it about as much as my more advanced MBP. The 5W Intel chip will only continue to get more and more powerful as time goes on.

One last interesting thought: I think in terms of where the future is headed, these types of devices (I'll call them ultra-ultra light) such as the rMB will become more mainstream and chip manufacturers will start skewing towards fanless designs, which are clearly the future. If there were ever a device where Apple's initial implementation of ARM in a macOS environment would make sense, it would be this device. Would love to see a future ARM implementation where this device pushes 12 hours of battery life while running an LTE connection.

So I was getting terrible battery life since my update to High Sierra and I couldn't find any offending app or service that was causing this. It was really getting so bad that the other day I only had about 5 to 6 hours. Then yesterday I found out by accident that my brightness wasn't automatically turning down. It basically was at 100% all the time (when you get used to it you won't notice it). I don't know how it got there and why it never went back to a lower number, but now having it set back to 50% I get my regular 10 to 12 hours of battery life (today it's even saying 13), so I'm happy again.
