I was driving home and my iPhone X was in my purse the whole time. ( about 20 min) When I got home and was taking my phone out of my purse it showed the high temperature warning and my phone was really really hot! WTH? I have no idea why. Like I said, it was in my purse and not on the dashboard with the sun beating on it or anything like that. Just in my purse.
I immediately turned it off and stuck it in the frig for a couple minutes.
Anybody have this happen as well?

I read online that you should indeed turn it off and cool it down by putting it in front of the AC vent if you are driving or in the frig for 2 minutes.

If your phone ever says high temperature warning you go back to the store and you get your phone replaced or you get it fixed you don't put it in the refrigerator

Especially if the internal components are fairly warm in temperature and then you put it in a cooler environment like a refrigerator, that's not good for the soldering and or internal components, which could crack/ cause a decrease due to temperature rather quickly.

Rather than criticize, advise...

I’d go to Apple and describe the scenario and hope to exchange it.

Yes, I got the thermal warning in similar circumstances and after running diagnostics Apple exchanged my X for a new one.

For future reference I wouldn't put it in the refrigerator. Extreme temp chances can cause a dew point to be met and condensation from the air form inside the phone.

Shut it off and set it in a safe place that in the unlikely event it caught on fire (extremely rare) it wouldn't hurt anyone or anything. This would be if the battery had a short.

Was the phone doing anything? Maps running? Anything jammed into the charging port? Did the phone recover and now its fine?

No, it wasn’t doing anything. It was just in my purse as I was driving on a cool day. I took it to APPLE and they ran some tests. No explanation as to why this happened. They said my iPhone X is new so it is still under warranty so if it happens again, I’m covered. They just documented the problem. That was today. I’ll see how it goes but I am totally perplexed as to why this occurred.
